POSITIVELY THE GREATEST
PLAY EVER PRESENTED IN
GAINESVILLE. _
ONE NIGHT,
HUNT’S OPERA HOUSE,
Monday, Dec. 16.
SPECIAL ENGAGEMENT!
WE SHOULD TAKE STILL AN
OTHER STEP FORWARD.
The election of Mr. P. N. Par
ker last Tuesday as Mayor of
Gainesville, to succeed Hon. R. D.
Mitchel, means that the good work
inaugurated by the latter s ad
ministration .will be continued.
This means greater prosperity for
Gainesville, as well as the rule of
democracy in a Democratic town.
Judge J. B. Gaston, who op
posed Mr. Parker, is a man person
ally liked by almost everybody in I
Gainesville. He is a Republican,
however, and should not have pre
sumed to think the people " of a
Democratic town would forever
allow personal friendship to over
come party fealty and permit him
to again enjoy the emoluments of I
the chief elective position of a peo-1
pie, the majority of whom are of a |
political faith directly opposite to I
his own.
And now, that this matter has
been settled, we again ask our pen- I
file to take still another step for-1
ward by having a white primary to j
determine who shall represent)
us in onr municipal government-1
Almost every other city in Georgia]
has already adopted this plan, and I

| The election passed off . quietly,
] but the people registered ‘ their
[choice in no uncertain .manner,
as is shown by the overwhelm
ing majority for Parker. There was
I nothing disorderly around the polls,
although the friends of each of the
candidates were active throughout the
day. Parker opened with a good lead
and maintained a steady gain until
the polls closed.
In the contest between Williams and
Alexander, the former’s majority was|
overwhelming. It was generally con- j
ceded beforehand that Williams would
win, but it was thought his vote would
rim about like Parker’s and Gaston’s.
“Jimmie,” however, just donbled him
self up into ak not and outran a ”skeer-
ed rabbit.” And he defeated a migh
ty good man, which makes the race all I
the more complimentary, for D. Alex- J
we are standing in our own

Four years ago Ibis paper, point*
fog out the evils of our present
system, urged the people not to
have another election without first
selecting the candidate? by a white
primary. So far, our efforts in
this direction have been unreward
ed, but as each succeeding elec
tion brings out more clearly the
evils and the dangers of the pres-j
ont system, we’ cannot hut hope

I When it comes to striking “wheel-
I horses,” just'pick out Mr. S, C. Don-
lap Jr., who was elected from the
I Third ward without opposition, being
I complimented with 685 yotes, and]
j his partner on council from the Third,
j Mr. L, D. Puckett, and yon will have

j lhmlap is active in all things tending
I to the advancement of Gainesville and

I With the above men'in charge oft
j the city government, the good work I
I inaugurated during Mayor Mitchell's
administration will be continued, and
I Gainesville, instead of going backward,
I will go forward, outstripping all ether 1
towns in Georgio.
j One feature of this election was j
J closely akin to, or resembling, the re-
I cent overthrow of Tammany in New)
York. There, a combination of many!
elements was formed in which even |
President Roosevelt participated to the
extent of casting his ballot for the re-
] form ticket and the influence which
such action would have upon the re-1
suit. Here, the Republican organiza
tion, because of certain local condi
tions, threw its strength to the Parker I
ticket and helped to increase the ma
jority.

NEXT YEAR DO MORE.
It would bb hard to find a town
that has^ made greater advance
ment daring the past year than
Gainesville. Everything here is
<m the upgrade and indications
point to greater things in the fut
ure. New enterprises have been
started, new houses have been
built, both for business and res
idence purposes, new people have,
oome in, new capital has been
invested, and, altogether, things
generally have had an upward ten
dency, all of which indicates that
Gainesville is on a solid substan
tial boom.
During the next year every cit-
izeu should put bis shoulder to the
wheel and do more than ever for
the Queen City ot the Mountains.
This sort of spirit should prevail
Among every class of citizens, and
all of us will be the better by it.
