Wireless Signals Across The
Ocean.
St; Johns, N.F., Dec. 14.—Sig
nor announced the most
wonderful scientific discovery of
modern times tonight in stating
that he had received electee sig-
Dais across the Atlantic ocean
from his station in Cornwall, En
gland. He explains that before
leaving England he made plans
for accomplishing this result, for
while his primary object was to
ecmmnnicate with ocean liners in
micboeeaii he hoped to succeed in
attaining the wonderful scientific
achievement of wireless teleg
raphy across the Atlantic.
Signor Marconi’s station in
Cornwall is most powerful. He
possessed an electric force, gener
ated there, a hundred times grea
ter than at his ordinary stations.
Before he left England he ar
ranged that the electrician in
charge of the station, which is lo
cated at Poldhu, should begin
sending signals daily after a cer
tain date,' which Signor Marconi
arrived here a week ago Friday,
selected Signal Hill, at the en
trance to the harbor, as an exper
imenting station and moyed his
equipment there. Last Monday
he cabled to the Poldhu station
to begin sending signals at 3 p. m.
daily and to continue them until
6p. m., these hours being respec
tively 11:30 a. m. to 2:30 p. m.,
St. Johns’ time.
During these hours Wednesday
Signor Marconi elevated the kite
with an aerial wire by means of
which signals are sent or received.
He remained at the recorder at
tached to the receiving apparatus,
and to his profound satisfaction
signals were received by him at
intervals, according to the pro
gram arranged previously with
the operator at Poldhu. These
signals consisted of repeating at
intervals the letter “S,’’ which in
Marconi’s code is made by three
dots or quick strokes. This signal

as yet only in an embryo stage,
and that the possibility of its ul

Ladies Fight The Oil Trust.
Chardon, Ohio, Dec. 19—The
fight being made by the Standard
Oil Company against Melvin Hos^
sier, the local oil and gasoline
peddler, has proved rather disas
trous for the trust. The women
of the town have taken up the
cudgel for Hossler. A committee
of ladies today canvassed the
town and procured the promises
of every housewife not to accept
Standard oil even as a gift, while a
number of ladies accompanied the
Standard wagon on its rounds and
persuaded prospective customers
not to buy. The Standard has
its wagon out every day, but is j
only known to have made four!

ing oil as low as two and three
cents, while Hossler V sales have
far exceeded the average at the
regular price. The women are
determined to beat the trust in I
this fight. i

Again on Thursday during the
same hours, the kite was elevated

so complete that Signor Marconi
