of the members of the family.
Ingenious as are our Yankee in
ventors, they do not enjoy the com
plete monopoly in the way of in
ventiveness. In the land where aft
ernoon tea holds such sway as in
England it is Jo he expected that
some genius would find a way to
make it easy for the tea drinker to
handle his cup of liquid refreshment
and the accompanying biscuit or
cake at the same time. A little con
trivance has been devised which is
attached by means of a clip to the
teacup and a handy and practical
resting place for the cracker, sand
wich, etc., is thus provided. The
tea infuser with its long handle is
another convenience that will ap
peal to the dispenser of this popular
beverage. Claret and water jugs,
tea and coffee pots, cream and milk
ewers are appearing nowadays in
classic form; and many of the new
designs are copies of old Roman,
Etruscan and Italian patterns. They
are ornamental as well as nsefuL
There is also a great consola
tion offer. $500 will be distrib
uted among those who fail to se
cure one of the larger prizes and
whose estimates come within 500
bales either way of the exact fi
gure. This'allows a margin of
1000 bales within fwhich fc all esti
mates are sure to receive part of
the prize money offered. The
point is to strike the estimate ex
actly during January. This is a
possibility. In a contest similar
to this the Constitution has had
the number hit exactly and paid
out $1,000 for the estimate. In
another similar contest the esti
mate has come within one of the
exact figure, and all the prizes of
fered have been paid out upon es
timates that were not fifty re
moved from the exact estimate.
