Public School Vacates Building ana balance
of Term Will be Taught in Audito
rium of City Hall.
There have been two reports on the
central public school building, one by
building inspector Frank Pittman of
Atlanta, and the other by G. H. Cut
ting & Co., the mill contractors. The
first named declares the building per
fectly safe, while the latter declares
it dangerous. Which report to rely on,
is the perplexing-problem the city fath
ers are wrestling with.
A special called meeting of council
was held Thursday night to discuss and
take action upon the matter, and the
result is shown in the following reso
lution which was unanimously passed:
Whereas, two reports have been made
concerning the central building of the
public school which are conffctmg
and leaves us in total darkness as to
its condition. -
Moved and seconded that the, pub*
lie school building, known as central,
be abandoned for the present, provided
the Board of Education of the City of
Gainesville think proper; and that ade
quate quarters be provided by the city
lor the continuation of said school un
til the building can be examined and
an intelligent report be made as to the
safety or non-safety of said building.
A resolution was also unanimously
adopted tendering the city hall audi
torium to the Board of Education for
use of the public school, if the board
deemed it wise to vacate the main col
lege building.
The Board of Education met at 10:30
.
o’clock yesterday morning and decided
for the city public school to vacate the
central college building at once, and
to use the auditorium of the city hall
for school purposes for the Remainder
of this term, with such room in another
building as will be needed to accomo
date all the pupils.
Accordingly the city authorities will
begin placing the seats, desks and other
school furniture in the city hall audi
torium today, and Monday morning
the public school will open up for the
balance of this term in these new quar
ters.

' New Service From Posfcoffice to depot.
Advertisements are out for a new
letting of the contract for carrying the
mail from the postoffice to the South
ern railway depot, and persons wish
ing to put in bids should call and see
Postmaster Farrow and learn definite
ly what will be required. The shab
by out-fit on that line this winter has
not been creditable to our city or the
postoffice department and our citizens
will be happy to learn of the proposed
improvement.
Have Moved In.
The Smith-Thomas Co., moved into
their new store in the Hudson block
this week. They have a pretty store
room, in fact there is not a more com
modious and handsome one anywhere.
The trading public would do well to al
ways call on this up-to-date firm when
making purchases. Mr. W. C. Thomas
is manager of the business, and he is a
good one, too. The same corps of effic

Mdse. Co., continue with the new firm.

It is a Fact.
That during 1901 the sales of Dr, Dix

greater than the total combined sales
