WANT A NEW STREET-
A petition has been circulated
this week and liberally signed
asking the mayor and council to
open a new street or alley from
Green to Race streets, intersect
ing Green at or near the Barrett
place and running into Race be
tween Col. W. I. Hobbs’ and Mr.
W. 35. Smith's property. A new
street is greatly needed to connect
these' two popular thorough-fares,
and the people generally hope -to
see one opened at or near where
it is being petitioned for. The
petition will be presented to coun
cil at the next regular meeting
next Thursday night.

; The cold wave which came down
on this section of the country last
Monday and Tuesday caused much
uneasiness among the people, lest
the fruit be killed. From inquir
ies among those in position to
know, it is said that frnit is un
hurt. This is “ gratifying, as the
fruit crop has come to be an im

good, 4 though it is too early to
count on a crop yet. It is the
hope of every one that there will
be plenty of fruit of every kind

J. L. A. Moore, Frank Williams
and Skip Garrison, white, were
fined $5 and costs each, and Estell
Martin, Ellis Strickland, Pomp
Deason, Annie Bowen and Clark
Seluaan, colored,J were fined $1

waB fined $5 and costs for being
drunk and jumping off a moving
train at the Southern depot.
Robert Keesler and Alf Souther,
colored, were fined $1 and costs
each for being drunk and disorder
ly last Tuesday.
Walter Allen, colored, was made
to pay his street tax, which he
