Improved The Water Station. Considerable work has been done at the pumping' station of the waterworks this week. Ditches have beep dug on either side of the dam and reservoir, and the latter has been covered over so that no trash or rubbage can fallin. C. .Brown is putting m some new fixtures in his drug store, and is keeping up with the growing spirit in Gainesville by improving his property. Dr. Whelchel and Mr. John F. Press- ley of’GiHsville, were in town Thurs day. Mr. P. S. Lytle has accepted a position to travel %or the MeNeal Mar ble Co., and has moved to Camden, S. C., with his family, which point he will make headquarters. IWsms legged race, won the sack race. Separate tables were spread for the white and colored firemen and. another table was spread for out siders, and everybody feasted on the good things. All say the pa rade and display was the best ever made by the fire department, and the boys were heartily congratu lated on all sides. Everybody now realizes what a ‘ splendid fire department the city has, and ail are more willing than ever to lend the boys every encouragement in their splendid work. Tuesday. They were applauded, toasted and feted by the citizens of Gainesville in snch a manner that they can no longer doubt that the people are back of them in their work. Robertson "There is for the firemen.” on the program was a magnificent parade by the fire department in the following order: Chief of Police and mounted patrolmen; Queen city band; Mayor and city council; Paid firemen and hose wagon; volunteer firemen headed by Chief Staton, mounted; Hook and ladder company, colored. The hose wagon, fire engine and other vehicles m the parade were gaudily decorated, and the parade was a pretty one. The parade formed at the pity hall and the route was up Main street to Washington; up Bradford to Seminary avenue; down Green to Spring; down Spring to Grove; up Washington to public square, where parade halted and after music by the band, thelpeople were addressed by Col. Howard Thompson who reviewed the history of the fire department from its organization up to date. He extended the thanks of tne people to the fire* men, and praised them for their faithful and efficient service. The parade was finished &b the city hall and the practice runs were commenced. Fire compan ies 1 and 2, at the sound of the fire alarm, then made runs with engine and hose wagons to fire plugs and cistern on public equare, where couplings were made m short order. The contests by the Hook and Ladder company were quite inter esting and showed what^good work the,colored men do when fighting the flames. Larkin Roberts, cap tain of the company, made the quickest time, running 125 yards and ascending and descending the ladder in SB seconds. A game of baseball wrs played on the diamond near the Southern depot Tuesday afternoon between the Gaines ville and Jefferson nines. Jefferson won the game by a score of seven to three.
