HIS HAND HASHED TO A PULP.
Accident to J. W. Vaughn, of Cartenville.
Cartersvii.i.e, Ga. September
15 —Mr. James W. Vaughan, a
leading dry goods merchant and
one of the owners of the new flour
ing mill here, happened to an ac
cident yesterday in which he lost
his hand and was narrowly saved,
as every one believes, from a hor
rible death. He was standing over
the wheat aollers at the mill,
which had just started for the first
time, aud in a spirit of interest
was brushing loose wheat grains
between the rollers with his hand
when that member was suddenly
caught, drawn between the rollers
and mashed to a pulp. Mr. J. W.
Knight, his partner, seeing his
peril, by mam force pulled Mr.
Vaughan from the grip of the roll
ers, litterally tearing the hand
from the body as he did so. With
out assistance his whole arm and
probably his body wotld have
been drawn between the rollers.
