armored ford cars as
bandit chasers are the
LATEST POLICE INOVATION.
Gen. Smedly D. Buter, Philadel
phia’s dymamic Commissioner of
Public Safety, is the man who in
troduced them.
Before he took office a few weeks
back, the Philadelphia city Council
voted Gen. Butler $5,000 with which
to purchase an automobile for his
personal use.
But when salesmen for the high
priced cars appeared and tried to
interest him, he made it plain that
he intended to spend the money in
purchasing small, light cars for use
as bandit chasers by the police de
partment.
The Ford runabout was his choice
and it wasn’t long before an enter
prising Ford Salesman had a car foi
the General’s inspection.
Now the Philadelphia police have
six of these armored FoFrd ears and
under General Butler’s plan this
number will shortly be augmented
until there will be ninety such chas
os in service.
The entire shell of the tody is
lined with t-S-inch special steel and
<he space between the armor plating
and the outside of the car is packed
with loose cotton and course hair to
retard the velocity of bullets. Armor
plate also to/ers the cowl and runs
Good Roads Help Religion.
“Perhaps it has not occurred to
people generally that the cause of
religion in rural communities is pro
moted or held back by the condition
of the roads,” said a statehouse of
ficial. “If the roads leading to
churches in the country districts are
good, more people go to the churches
and the whole community is benefited
by the increased religious interest
aroused.
“On the other hand, if the roads
are poor ones so that people cannot
get to the churches in bad weather
without great discomfort and the
loss of much time, the attendance at
the churches suffers and the cause
of religion in the community of a
necessity also suffers.”
The country church bears a close
relationship to the highways and the
building of good roads. While it
may show one’s faith to go over poor
roads in bad weather to the nearest
church, it is argued, the test is not
an altogether fair one, for some
people who would wish very much to
go to church may not have convey
ances that can travel really bad
roads they could go easily.
With good roads enabling country
people to attend church, making
school attendance larger and putting
country people in easy communica
tion with nearby markets, rural de
velopment, leading agriculturists
claim, will make such progress that
in time the country community will
have as many advantages as the
town, and country life would be as
delightful as it should be and as it
would be if people of the country dis
tricts had roads as good as the
towns.

The Ford engines are specially
eo.uipped to nfiord increased spee 1
and tests n.sdc show some interest
ing results. In one test to show
acceleration and power deleloped for
hill climbing, a mile was covered in
one minute and thirty-one seconds
from a standing start. On a count
ry road the car attained a speed of
more than sixty miles an hour and
in a city street test covered 2,828
feet at a speed of approximately
seventy miles an hour.
Ford cars have been in use by
police departments all over the
country for years and recently there
has beern a rapidly increasing tend
ency in the larger cities to use them
in place of the motorcycles since
i they are less conspicuous, and af
ford greater protection and com
fort. Portland, Ore., is one of the
latest cities to adopt the Ford cars
to replace motorcycles and now has
twenty-three of them in operation
Cleveland Heights, Ohio and Cin
cinnati are other large cities which
have recently joined the Fordranks;
the armored Ford as used in Philadel
phia, however, is General Butler’s
idea.
DAUGHERTY THE BRAZEN.
No hysteria furnishes the motive
power for the widespread demand
for the resignation of Attorney Gen
eral Daugherty. So long as Presi
dent Harding lived republicans loyal
to the executive refrained from
pressing their demand. W r ith no
such embarrassment, the feeling is
all but universal that Daugherty
should go.
His unfitness for the high office
he holds was recognized from the
first. By no stretch of • definitions
could he have been regarded as even
professionally qualified for the of
fice of public prosecutor of the fed
eral government. But he was a per
sonal friend of Mr. Harding and a
good politician, in the sense of that
word, and he got the job.
His obstinancy and his audacity in
resisting the public demand that he
quit is typical. For years he was
an embarrassment to the Harding
administration and continued to be.
Apparently he feels no differently
about the Coolidge administration
and intends to brazen it out.
The tolerance of such a person
ality in the cabinet is certain to
weaken still more the public confi
dence. If not a part of the upheaval
against Daugherty comes with the
oil scandal which has demonstrated
so clearly the unfitness and im
propriety of entrusting public affairs
to the group in charge at Washing
ton.

Drugs Excite

Take Salts at First Sign of
Bladder Irritation or
Backache
The American men and women must
guard constantly against kidney trouble
because we often eat too much rich food.
Our blood is filled with acids which the
kidneys strive to filter out; they weaken
from overwork, become sluggish, the
eliminative tis.-ues clog and the result
is kidney trouble, bladder weakness and
a general decline in health.
When your kidneys feel like lumps
of lead; yottr back hurts or the urine
is cloudy, full of sediment, or you are
obliged to seek relief two or three times
during the night; if you suffer with sick
headache, or’ dizzy, nervous spells, acid
stomach, or if you have rheumatism
when the weather is bad, begin drink
ing lots of good soft water and get front
your pharmacist about four ounces of
Jad Salts. Take a tablespoonful in a
glass of water before breakfast for a
few days and your kidneys may then
act fine.
This famous salts is made from the
acid of grapes and lemon juice, com
bined with lithia, and has been used for
years to help flush and stimulate clogged
kidneys, to neutralize the acids in the
system so they no longer are a source
of irritation, thus often relieving blad
der’ disorders.
Jad Salts is inexpensive; can not in
jure, makes a delightful effervescent
iithia-water drink and belongs in every
home, because nobody can make a mis
take by having a good kidney flushing
any time. By all means have your phy
sician examine your kidneys at least
twice a year.
