“now he uses a knife.
From the New York Telegram.
George C. Boniface has not
been feeling in the best of
health lately, and his wife has
attributed it. to excessive smok
ing.
The actor, being particularly
fond of good ci’ars, denied this
vehemently, ami vowed, with
mental reservations, that he
only smoked three cigars a day.
Not being able to prove to the
contrary, hi* wife, like a wise
woman, said nothing. Subse
quent events, hcwevor, proved
that this did not cause her to
ceaso thinking.
Last week the comedian had
a birthday, and his wife pre
sented him with n watch charm
in the 6hape of a cigar cutter.
It was a cute little thing, and
to prove his appreciation of the
eift he used it vigorously the
first day. The next morning
the w ife asked:
“How many cigars did you
smoke yesterday ?”
“Three,,’ was the reply.
“Thirteen, you mean,” was
the rejoiner.
There was something in the
tone of his letter half which
caused the actor to think he
had better temporize, and so lie
said:
“Weli, as yesterday was my
birthday, perhaps I did exceed
my allowance by one or two, but
1 am certain I did not smoke
thirteen.”
“Oh. but you did: no more
and no 1< ss. I know it and can
prove, it.”
“How?”
“That's my secret. And now
promise mo that you will limit
yourself to three today.’
Of course he promised, again
with mental reservations, and
then he went into the woodsln d
to think it over.
Recalling the events of the
previous day, lie found that
thirteen was about the right
number, and it didn't take him
long to connect his new charm
with Ins wife's knowledge. A
close examination of the inno
cent-looking little thing proved
that it was a register as well as
a cutter.
And now dove-colored peace
broods over the comedian's
household and a loving wife
trust her husband as implicitly
us of yore.
The charm registers three
every day- He cuts the others
with his knife.

Hens tl at do nut have water

It is a mistake to suppose the
incubator is an automatic ma
chine that will run itself.
It is not best to have too
many nests. A dozen hens can
get along well with four or five.
When you do not want them
to breed do not let the liens and
roosters run together.
The laying of unusually large
I 'ggs is a proof that the hens
an; in an overfat condition.

The nest egg, if not china,
should be marked so that it will

The Plymouth Rock attains
I maturity earlier than the Wyan
dotte, but Hie latter is a more
. persistent layer.
It must be a poor soil indeed
in which the scratching biddies
will not fn.d some reward lor
their labor.
Those who think thirteen an
unlucky number can get the
hens to spread over fifteen eggs
for a sitting.
If the liens are slow to wean
the chicks take them away, as
they crowd the young ones at
night when confined in a box.
As soon as the cockerels be
gin to crow separate them fiom
>he pullets. They will thrive
better, and besides, they require
different feed.
If the young chicks are confin
'd in barren yards give them
plenty of cabbage, lettuce <>r
grass from the lawn. They will
relish it for a change.
Sunshine is the best medicine
for poultry as well as men. If
the house is dark and gloomy,
the fowls will stay out of it even
in the worst weather. Nothing
likes sunshine more than poul
try.
Cholera among chickens is a
disease which is a result of the
poor conditions which surround
them. With good food, fresh,
pare water, daily clean quarters
and a good range it seldom gets
a foothold.
Lice sap (lie blood from the
chickens, and cause restlessness
of nights; and on morning fowls
ce.me from the roosts feverish
and thirsty. They drink too
much, and sit around and soon
get indigestion. They take cold
easily when their systems are so
impart'd, and the cold, if let
aii ne, runs into roup.
