BE LOYAL TO YOURSELF : |
My friend, Editor Jack Williams is .always saying things that
are for community good, He wrote one a week or so ago cn the
q lestion of joyalty to “My Home Town,” Well we have ftried
more than once to say something stirring on that subject, but in try
in. to solve the effect of its good. it was not so noticable. *
If we could ouly plant that thought in the minds of our citizens,
one and all that they=YOU—are the subject matter under discus
sion and that the loyally to town question is one that bas that per
scnal element in it, that we must*get under our skins that the man
that depends upon the home town for a living, is not only disloyal
to his town, when he fails to patronize and support home institutions
but is disloyal to himseif. By example he emphasizes the fact
that he does not believe in such doctrine except where he, himseli
must or will profit by the transection. Your town will not grow,
cannot even hold its own cn selfishness. You are certainly se!-
ting an example, whether it is good, bad or indifferent, which some
who are aware of your act, does likewise, Just have a good think
nyer this brother. not for our sake, or the town’s sake, but for yeur
own sake,
This week the Southesstern Fair held from Monday, on unfil
Saturday. Did you lend a hand to make our display exemphfy the
community progress or products? Did you 0, or are you yer go
ing? Just a kindly word or » pat on the back meansa lot. In
terest brother, in town or commuuity affairs, identifies you as a part
of the machinery that supples power to force the town {o go for
ward, to build bigger anu better.
Are you an alert business man, interested in the better develop
ment of the business of the town? Do you patronize the things of
town that means the making cf a better town? Are have you al
lowed your thoughts to be moulded into a narrow idea that "‘Oh, well
[ can get along without you; your faiiure means ndthing to me”
If a failure effected only the individual, your logic could be acerpted
as a poor apology, but a failure, no ‘natter how small, cannot be confi:.-
ed to an individual; it may cripple one of your main supporters suffi
ciently to effect you seriously, and in any event it is hurtful to the
business interest of the communiiy to have failures. Aud now we
get down to the heart of our subject, which pray give solemn
thought and prayful attention— :
When business men meet, do you meet with them?
If work is to be done 1o aia a movement for the towi's, gooc
or the communities welfare, do you lend aid or escouragement?
Do you back up your church and its auxilleries?
Do you always vote? Do you serve un juries?
_ Do you bave the interest of the schools at heart?
In fact are you really a genuine upstanding ¢itizen? Or are
vou just a fellow living bere, doing business, selfishly, evading the
responsibilties of life that means so much to the future good of all
that is cleun, wholesome, aud uplifting to men, the town and the
community?
. There is this to be said of the reason prompting this article—
we believe in the town and its institutior, the enterprise and the
progressiveness of some of its people—and that reason is the discour
agement of an effort to do things, when luke warmness prevails, and
absent from meetings, merchants, when tiade housting was the sub
ject discussed. Bah, whul a ridiculous joke, on the listeners,
There is no intention on our part to prod you. We are too
much interested in your success, my success, and the betterment ol
our conditions to nap and dream, when tne bugie is in our hands and
we have the wind to blow a blast to awake the sleeping warriors.
The question is shall we follow the line of least resistance, every
man for himself, and we might say, the devil take the hindermosi
one, but we won't, for the good book says, the last shall be first—if
they come at the eleventh hour. So, why nol now, get your con
sent to come and join efforts 1o work in harmony for mutual gond
We are broad in our avpeal, we include you in business, you
that are professional, the lawyers, the doctors, the preachers, as
well as every man of you that owns propariy orlives within the town
or the community ~
What we want to see is men working in harmony for Folkston
and its institutions. ~We want to see a community or friendly
folks. Smile once in awhile, it will dogood. Save rour frown,
get rid of it, hide it under a bushel, and let your smile beam forth—
for Chritmas is coming, and Santa Claus wants good cheer.
' Listen for the call, bro her. Hearken to the Sound
let gather togeth(r for a ' nited effort—th t is the thing
that counts.
