Athens, Ga.—Georgia is being stir- red from one end to tbo other and through and through by campaigns of preparedness for the boll weevlL Government experts who have been following the weevil fight say that Georgia is far bettor prepared for the coming of the boll weevil than any other state, by reason of the cam paigns which have been conducted with such success and by the several years’ work of county agents and ex perts as directed from the College of Agriculture and ,jn which the federal forces have been co-operating. All the work which has been doqe by .county agents both men and wom an, all the club work repiu ented by the corn clubs, canning clubs, peultry dubs, pig clubs, four-crop clubs, calf clubs, etc., all the work done by traveling experts, and all the work of farmers’ schools and Inatiifites 1ms Jjeen preparing the fanners of the state for the boll weevil. In the territory of the state where the weevil has appeared or where It is about to appear and do its serious damage to the cotton crop, special campaigns have been conducted and are still being conducted to help the farmers who have not already done so, make their suddon changes In agri cultural activities. DO NOT FOLLOW COTTON WITH COTTON The practice of following cotton with cotton is considered a poor farm ing practice, but In weevil territory it Is considered dangerous to the crop The College of Agriculture is urging through county agents and others that the farmer be persuaded as far ap possible to use cotton fields for other crops and put the cotton where It did not grow the previous year. HIGH RECOMMENDATION FOR GEORGIA INSTITUTION been to get cut ’into tho rural neigh borhoods where the farmers live. The county agents have been holding field or group meetings of farmers lu fields where crops and farm practices of a new sort are being demonstrated. The boll weevil meetings have been bold at school houses in the country In preference to county seats or tow. Real Farmers Speakers To inspire all the confidence possi ble among farmers who are not famil iar with tho real service of college ox- pert s, farmers have been obtained from Louisiana and Misisslppl to tell how they have mado a success growing cotton under boll weevil conditions. Along with these are experts who have just us definite and practical knowledge on various crops that will grow in place of cotton in Georgia, It has come to tho attention of the authorities of tho Georgia State Col lege of Agriculture that the United States Department of Agriculture has highly recommended the cotton course of the institution to residents of other states. Traveling Schools Week long schools are held in vari ous parts of the state where farmers turn students again and attend school for a week to learn more about all kinds of farming. Where such schools have been held there is always the greatest demand for them again. They have been the means of creating uety interest, outlook and optimism on the part of farmers. Moving Picture Show The College of Agriculture has been operating a splendid moving picture outfit over all parts of Georgia* taking the show out to tho school houses to the country and there putting on the screen as clear a picture as can be seen in any city. The reels tell of better farming. They have been shown free and have been attended by a great many thousand people, some of whom have thus been provid ed their first view of the “movies.” Boll Weevil Preparedness Clubs Boll weevil preparedness clubs have been formed. Certificates of member ship that embrace an agreement to do certain things In varying far* practices and to fight tba weevil. The^r form the baais of co-operation neces sary to successfully hold tho weevtt In check in a neighborhood. Members of this club are provided buttons as an insignia of tlieir agreement to do their duty. Business Men Campaign Believing it important that bankers and business men should have the best Information possible in readjusting their relations to the farmer so that the farmer should suffor the least, the CoHego of Agriculture has conducted a campaign among business men, the • principal speakers being bankers and farmers from boll weevil territory in Louisiana, Mississippi, who have suc cessfully met the Issue in their re spective territories. Literature Distributed Principally through the medium of the weekly press, tho College of Agri culture has been disseminating boll weevil, and crop diversification infor mation so effectively that very few farmers in the state have not been reached in this way. Thus the week ly papers have become a very grpat factor in the enterprise. Posters have been issued, special circulars, bulletips qf various kinds, all of which have been eagerly snatch- farmers.
