22,000 Men Wanted For U. S. Navy U.S. Naval Recruiting Station, 514 P, 0. Building, Atlanta, Ga. The Editor: Our navy today is in urgen in d o r 22,000 men to man itb si,.,),. In other words, we aie short just enough men to man tw nty-two dreadnaughts of th» PEMNSYATANIA class, our la- t' st type of battleships. When it i considered that there are at present only 60,000 men in the Nayy it may be realized what this shortage of men means in the way of prepa edness of our fleet- At this! critical time in our natonal life it is of the ut most importance that the Navy, “Our first line of Defense” be recruited up to full strength. More men are enlisting in the Navy now than evir before in the history of the country. These are young men who are an honor to themselves and their country and of whom every real American has just reason to be proud. There are thousands more men just like these and the Navy needs their service—not sometime, if we have war, but NOW. The duty of filling the Navy rests primarily with the citizens of this country, and every Ameri can citizen who is worthy of the name should do his part in help ing to man our ships, Ships have been built for the defense of the country, and now it is up to the people to man them. There is no time to lose. If the Navy is called, we want every unit of the fleet to go out fully manned with traieeu men. There is a prevalent idea among civilians that “the only time to render service to youi country is in time of war.” Also there has be n so much talk to the effect that we can rise up in our might overnight and send forth an invincible Navy and Army that some believe it. Such false ideas are to be de plored and should de dispelled at once. Men for the Nany must be trained before they can render their country efficient service. It is to be regretted that some yarents not only use their in fluence to prevent their sons from enlisting but in many cases refuse to sign the age certigcate required. It is the patriotic privilege of parents to inculcate in their sons “love of country and that his first duty is tv his country” and those who fail do not their duty clearly. It is urged on all leaders of community thought to consider seriously the critical situation, the imperative need of the Navy, the necessity to be prepared to act quickly, and to co-operate with recruiting officers in put ting the facts squarely before the people. No more patriotic service can be rendered than to help make the Navy what is required in size. Respectfully, H. R. KELLER, Lieutenant (J. G.) U. S. Navy.
