DOUGLAS COUNTY SENTINEL, DOUGLAS VILLE, GEORGIA. BOARD OF ENTOMOLOGY TELLS HOW TO COMBAT APPLE PESTS Atlanta, Jk J(8pefclal.)r-If you would hope to make perfect applet) even on a few trees, you must spray them and care for them just as you ; would If you wore building up a suc cessful commercial orchard and seek ing markets where only practically per fect fruli Is tolerated. It is the purpose of the Georgia ."State Board of Entomology in this brief article, not to go Into all the details of what muBt be done to con trol each disease and Insect, but rath- ■er to stress the Importance of giving whatever attention is necessary to tjje itrees TTgSt at this time or a little I|ter, to suppress pests and disease japg to jjyjnulate vigorous tree ancj fruit growth. Although well established, the apple industry in Georgia Is still in its ln- i&iicy. • development demands care ful and detailed kfldtrieu^!; T he 'board Is ready to furnish this lntor- jmatlon upon application, either In print, ed bulletin form dealing with practl- -cally everything the Georgia apple .grower must know, or from other •sources whenever particular data ij a-equired for a special case, it Is only necessary Jo write for the bulletin or such information as is desired and it Will be promptly furnished. For Apple Spraying i it will J>_e posable hero to give the 'spraying schedule only Fn general 'tenns, but where the grower has had iprovlous experience, he will be able tq •apply 7? To advantage! » r The first spraying for the control it •SaS Jose Scale, may take place any Jtlme’ilki'lng the dormant season. It Ss not too kite for It yet, provided dtye trees have not bp gun to bud. The co'deeiltrkted lime-suljhw solution should be used, <■ r The second spraying should lake place immediately after the bloflflr petals fail. This spraying should fcoh- trol the codding moth or eOmmon ap ple worm, and, where necessary, apple scab and other fungus diseases. The Jdpray should consist of one pound of "■powdered or two pounds of paste ar* : senate of lead, and three pounds of ■■ sluiced lime to GO gallons of water. "DUutai lime-sulphur 1b sometimes sub- ■ stltuted for the lime (IT quarts te 50 gallons .of mixture) particularly to prevent scab Infection on fruit and I leaves. The Final Task The third spraying Bhould come just N eix weeks after the second, using one pound powdered, or two pounds paste, arsenate of lead, and five quarts of lime sulphur solution to 60 gallons of ■water. Bordeaux mixture may be used with the arsenate of lead, In place of the llrae-BUlphur solution, and it is considered -a somewhat better fungicide. This spraying controls such fungus diseases as apple scab, apple leaf spot and bitter rot, as well as the second brood of the codding moth. These sprayings, wherever carefully followed, will control practically all of the most serious Insect arid disease pests which attack Georgia apple orchards. The plum curculio attacks the apple as well as the peach, but these sprayings will generally take care of it. The apple tree borer is best killed by the knife or by prodding Into Its channel with a wire. This should be done in early September. Use Good Machinery The (mpertoscc ot psjqg wjl( (pad? and efficient spraying machinery 1b ex plained in the bulletin, published by the board and prepared by Assistant Entomologist W. W. Chase. Tills Is really secondary only to the use of thoroughly reliable insecticides and fungicides. The uppl?. grower will get superior results from ids. treatment of his trees, only where he purchases ‘~ - * flake needs. _ ^ j&eap Primps and cheap accessories f llid J ood ones will pay for themselves hub* reds of times over. The barrel pump, while adequate for the small orchard, does not, as a rule, keep the solution sufficiently agitated to produce a thoroughly uniform spray. This is one of the Important reasons why gasoline power pumps are gaining favor and are becoming more generally used every year. They maintain high pressure, and a uniform physical and chemical spraymlst, There should be at least flhe lnfin tri the crew who thoroughly understands the mechanlsfl and operation ot the gasoline pump. Buy the best grade hose and plenty of It. Extension rods should be fitted with stopcocks to prevent waste, and should he long enough to reach the tops of the trees. For specially tall *he “Bordeaux" nozzle should be '-<ency. used fw.JgJjK. . *>*e Bulletin Wi-iT* WrSyj -id more. All of this lnfOTMMsn, presented In full aSlSlt, fS tins prepared for the beffsflti.bl the Georgia fruit grower under dln'Wflcfl of the State Board of Entomology,' whose assistants are constantly gath ering new facts as the result of direct personal experimentation and experi ence in Georgia orchards. The board regards the apple as one of the coming great commercial fruits ot Georgia; the development of the industry has only begun. It Is Its purpose to continue these experiments and to be in position at all times to , supply the grower with the latest In formation- and the best available data for treatment in every case. Where unusual conditions prevail In any orchard, the board, upon applica tion to State Entomologist E. Lee Wor sham, will be glad to send a specialist to Investigate and determine upon the most suitable remedy.
