To the Georgia Press:
Since the local exemption
boards haye gotten under way
and are certifying men for duty
in the army, it is but fair to the
rrenwhoare effected now and
to those whose numbers have
not yet been called, to lay the
following facts before them.
Telegram quoted below from
the War Department covers
every man’s case explicitly:
“Washington. D. C. Aug. 20.
—Army Recruiting Officer,
Atlanta, Ga. After a regis
tered person has been called
for military service by his
local board and directed to
appear for physical exami
nation, he ceases to be eligi
ble for voluntary enlist
ment.’’
From the above it can be Been
that the moment the board posts
a man’s name and mails him a
letter directing the man to re
port for physical examination,
that man looses his chance to
volunteer.
In the past few days a great
number of men have found
themselves in the predicament
of having been ordered to ap-
A Bad Combination
Last Saturday night residents
near the county jail were aroused
from their slumbers by the yells
of a young man who had, with
a combination of a cheap pistol
and some “white lightning,”
made himself a terror and got
himself behind the bars.
Out of respect to his parents
we will not mention the young
man’s name, for they are good
people and doubtfully greatly
chagrined. The young man has
a stigma on his former good
character and doubtless has
learned a good lesson—yet an
expensive one.
This should make other young
men think. Whiskey and pistols
are both absolutely useless, aye,
dangerous things, A rattle
snake would be a safer compan
ion than either.
What the Legislature has
Accomplished
Atlanta, Aug 14—The Georgia
legislature may not have ac
complished any very astonishing
results at the session just closed,
but at least it has done the state
no harm by unwise legislation.
It has passed a revision of the
general tax act which is expected
to increase the state’s revenue
about $500,000 a year by taxing
all kinds of business occupations
pear for phyisical examination' and professions, and it has
by their local boards and they 1 1)asse d a general appropriation

Deducting the volunteers, for
which we are entitled to credit,
would leave 56 who were not
physically up to the standard.
Those who passed and made
no claims for exemption are: C.

These young men waited too
long, and, consequently, lost
their opportunity to volunteer

ages of 18 and 40, I desire to say
that if you have no reason to
keep you i ut of the Army, it is
your patriotic duty to volunteer
at once. You get your choice of

To the young man who is un

The trained soldier certainly will

There is a Recruiting Sergent

you wish to choose your branch

Notice
Some, seeing my advertise
ment that I had succeeded Mr.
J. R. Duncan as agent for the
Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co.,
got the idea that I had also taken
over his Fire Insurance agency.
I am in no way connected with
the Fire Insurance business, and
Mr. Duncan will still look after
your wants in that respect.
