HISH SCHOOL GIRLSS

Are Not Patriotic Unless They Com
plete Their Education, Sense of
Noted Educators.
The United States Government, not- j
ed educators and all men of broad
vision maintain that we must bond
our every effort to maintain our edu
cational standards and through ex
pert leadership prepare for the “fierc
est Industrial struggle of the ages,” i
which is sure to follow* when the war ,
is over.
A call is made to nil students who i
have just finished high school train- I
lng to complete their education and j
not fall into the "slacker” class. With
this idea in view the Hoard of Trus
tees of the University of Georgia pass
ed the following resolution on June 10,
1017, and careful consideration should
be given it by every clear thinking
mother and father.
"Resolved, That It Is the sense of
the Board of Trustees of the Univer
sity of Georgia that the work of the
University and all the Branch Col
leges should he vigorously pushed dur
ing the coming session.
"That it Is the sense of this Board
that there should be no slackening of
the educational work of the state on
account of the war; that the war rath
er should quicken the work of educa
tion, not weaken it, for the problems
after the war will call more and more
for educated men and women to han
dle them for the future.
“That this resolution, as the sense
of the Board, should he communicat
ed to the Boards of all the branch col
leges and tho district agricultural
schools of tho rtate, with the earnest
request that there will le no slacken
ing In the educational work of tho
University System during the war.”

PECAN CASE-BEARER '
CONTROLLED BY SPt!AY
Tho best time to apply spray mate
rial to control the case-bearor of the
pecan tree is during the last of Au
gust and tho first of September, says
J. W. Firor of the State College of
Agriculture.
In spring the larvae of the oase-
bearor feed upon the tender buds and
unfolding leaves, but it is almost im
possible to control the pest at this
time, inasmuch as tho rapidly growing
foliage offers a protection to the in
sects and fresh food is constantly be
ing supplied them. However, spray
ing is effective In August and Septem
ber.
The spray is made up of one pound
of powdered arsenate of lead, two
pounds of unslaked lime and fifty gal
lons of water. It is made in the fol
lowing manner: Slake the lime and
add to this fifty gallons of water.
Make the powdered lead into a paste
with water, add to the fifty gallons
of lime water and then strain before
using. It should bo kept constantly
agitated and, if the pecan grower has
a large orchard, he should purchase
a power outfit to make his applica
tions of spray material. However, a
barrel outfit may be used efficiently
In small operations.
Arsenate of lead comes as a powder
and as a paste and, if the powdered
form Is not convenient, two pounds of
paste must be used instead of one
pound of powdered material, as called
for above.
GOOD CROPS
The editor has had the privi
lege of driving through several
sections of the c nnty in the last
few days and observing the
crops.
It is. indeed, most gratifying
to see them. Cotton looks fine
nd never has there been such a
crop of corn grown in Douglas
county as will be harvested this
year.
Mr. J. S. Bomar at Chapel
hill, showed us a field of corn
that has every indication of mak
ing 50 bushels to the acre and
he has 45 acres in corn.
Mr. Bomar has a nice bunch
of Jersey cattle and some fine
hogs and is building another
large barn to take care of his
splendid crops.
Things are looking unusually
good for the farmer at present
and we are glad it is so. for
when the farmer is prosperous it
makes everybody else so, „
Their Hunting Hours,
i Bird, of prey generally soak their
prey in the daytime, while beasta ot
prejr generally .eelfthelrs at night.
