SPRAY FOR SAN 10SE SCALE IN NOVEMBER Begin Fight On Insects That Will Sur vive Winter. November in the month in which orchards that are seriously affected by the San Jose scale should be spray ed with concentrated lime and sul phur mixture in order to eliminate and control this pest. The San Jose scale cannot be con trolled during the summer, as any spray material strong enough to kill this insect will injure the trees. Dur ing the dormant season, that is, after the leaves have fallen off the trees and growth has stopped, we can use strong spray- compounds that will kill tlve insect before spring opens up and the trees again put on their leaves. | Where an orchard is badly infested with this scale, two applications of the concentrated lime-sulphur are recom mended during the winter,—one in November and the other in February. If the orchard is not badly infested,,one application is sufficient; this one appli cation can be made either in Novem-1 her or in February. HOW TO MAKE SPRAY. | Concentrated lime-sulphur Is made as follows: 40. pounds of quick litne. 80 pounds flowers of fvPijmur and 50 I gallons cf water. "These qunntitites, or any proper proportion thereof, are boil ed in a kettle for at least GO minutes. The water boiled away is replaced. To obtain the best results this materi al should be tested with a hydrometer and diluted according to a table that t may be obtained from the College of; Agriculture in its Spray Calendar. When a hydrometer is not handy, one gallon of material is added to seven gallons of water and the result ing mixture* applied as a spray to the trees. When spraying the tree should be «venly and completely covered. Spray until the tree begins to drip, then atop. The higher the pressure used in ap plying the spray, the better the distri bution and the more economical the spraying. A good barrel sprayer can be purchased from $20.00 to $25 00 from practically any hardware dealer. If they do not carry same in stock, one can easily be obtained for you. The New Civilization.
