Large Crowd Saw Plane
According to schedule as pub
lished in last week’s Sentinel,
Lieut. Hugh Watson arrived ill
(or arrived over) Douglasville
Saturaday afternoon in a C rtiss
Biplane, He flew fiom Mont
gomery to Atlanta in the fore
noon making a hundred miles an
hour. He sent his father a tele
gram from Atlanta, I ut owing
to a little delay in its transmission
he beat the message here and
about 3:30 the cry “air plane”
was heard and the stores and
residences were soon emptied
and the entire population of the
town with hundreds from the
sourrounding country were wat
ching (many for the first time)
a real flym=- machine
It was a great show, for Lieut.
Watson who has had long train
ing in the service gave the
people of his home town an ex
hibition of merit. He "looped
the loop.” made the "tail spin”
and the “death drive’’ and about
all the' "stunts” expert flyers
are fi mili r wi h, His princi
pal features were exhibited right
over his old home with his father
a most interes ed spectator.
When his motor was sjiut off in
mid air and the machine headed
for the earth, people scringed
o-'d held their breath, believing
that lie had lost control and was
docim.d to death, but after fall-
ng several hundreds of feet and
was within a short distance of
tt e ground h ? again turned up-
vyarcl and proved his complete
mastery of the machine.
After perhaps thirty minutes
of sped, cular performances, he
left for Atlanta, making the 26
miles in i4 minutes, returi ing on
the train to spend the week end.
The people of Douglasville and
Doii8la3 Jounty appreciate thisy
aeirial visit of Lieut. Watson ar.d
hope that at some futuie time
he will return and make a land
ing.
We congratulate Hugh on his
achievement, and Douglasville
is proud of him as one of her
sons that has "made good.”
HAS SERIOUS ACCIDENT
Since writting the above Lieut,
Watson and Lieut. Weaver met
with an accident in which both
were seriously, though we ar#
glad to say, not fatally injured.
On Monday ofternoon, while
flyjpg over Atlanta, Lieut. Wea
ver driving, their machine be
coming unmanagable at a height
of only 300 feet and they fell to
earth in a crash and were carried
to Ft. Mcpherson were they are
receiving treatment
On Tuesday evening Lieut.
Weaver was able to be out but
Lieut. Watson is still confined
in the hospital with a broken leg
and other bruises. We hope he
will have a speedy recovery.
