, Misses Elsie and
Josephine Alexander finished a
course at t.ne .Smi;:i ( tu Shorthand
and Business College and both ae-
oepted splendid positions inaned-
iatiy. Miss Elsie is with that large
dry goods firm. Llougnerty-Littlo
Redwine company.
A third sister, Miss Pelma Alex
ander, lias recently completed a
course in the same school, the Sou
thern Busines , illege, and she
also obtained a nice position imm-
butfer between tl
goods and those who bought them!
Tile ambitious promise was made
that establishing fair prie.es par-!

that ‘•flm cost of living would be i

N. Peek, its chairman, in mourning j

vineed that they were wrong when
they came to their task "he.ievii.igl
that the wartime adjournment of
politics it. national affairs of econ
omic importance had been exten-
d.to c. ver the period of recon
struction.”
Mr. Peek stirred up a pretty big
noise by his protest. Secretary
Redfield and Secretary of the Tre
asury vilass issued statements that
were in direct conflict, and Att-
torney Ceueral Palmer and K«il-
wa.y Administrator Hines appea
red in the controversy as a sup
porter of .Mr. Glass. A “shake-up”
in the cabinet is talked of, since
tile opinion prevails in political
quarters that President Wilson
will have to put his “ministers”
on the carpet and decide between
them. It is likely, though that this
phrase of the controversy will
blow peer.
The important feature of the
flivver of the Industrial Board
is the admitted inability to "reg
ulate” through Mr. Redfields
method of voluntary cooperation.
Since the Railway Administration
would not permit, Mr. Redfield's
hoard to interfere in its affairs
it could hardly he expected that
private concerns would accept an
official hoard that Government
agencies have turned down.
Once more the Government lias
demonstrated that in normal times
it operates principally for politic
al purposes, and runs “dim” in
respect to industrial effency.
