“Nurse the Most Needed Woman in the

The leader of the boys' and girls’
clubs will have no difficulty In locating
some purebred stock of almost any
breed desired. Most of the leading
breeders of the country will make a |
price which the boy can afford to pay i
at weaning time this spring, and If !
any boy does not care to pay for the |
pig at time of purchase, arrangements
can be mnde with the breeder or at the
j hank to take the boy’s note without
security until an agreed date when
the project Is completed. It Is very
necessary that the boys should make ,
friends with the business men early
in life, for as soon as the farmer boy
feels that he Is a business man he will
be on the high road to success.
To place the public heulth on a
higher plane than ll has ever been Is
the object of a national program un-

pertinent of Nursing will soon teU the
people at this cummunlty the etory of
what Is being done and wlU ash thelg
co-operation.
One ot the great lessens of the WOHdl
wnr is found in tile unnecessarUy low'
standards of physical health revealed.
This Was brought out most forcibly in
the great number of rejections of
young men called to the colors under
tile Select I ve Service Law. Records
show that throughout the United
Slates one-third of the young men ex
amined for military service were dis
qualified from hearing arms for their
country through minor physical de
fects, a large proportion of which'
might have been avoided by compul
sory school examination and proper
medical und nursing care.
Urgent Need of Nurses.
further proof of the general urgent,
need of women trained in nursing was
supplied by the epidemics of Spanish
intliienza that have caused terrific
loss of life and suffering throughout
the country. Hundreds of thousands
of persons died, and In many commu
nities the plague apt-end without uny
adequate nteuns of checking it because
of the Impossibility of obtaining wom
en capable of caring for tile victims.
Reports .show- that many persons kc-.
ttially died without attention heeausu
the overworked doctors could not 1
reach them alt, nurses could not be’,
found who knew whut to do, and
neighbors feared to go near the help-
less patients.
The uselessness and danger of such
a waste of '‘human power" Is only too,
apparent, for the health and strength
of a nation can only he measured by
the health and strength of Its people.
Recognizing the fact that the crux of
the whole situation lies In giving ever-
community the means of building ’
THrWo nursing strength, Ihe Am
can Red Cross, In co-operatleo with
the various Cbautauquas, Is sending
broadcast the message that none can
afford to ignore.
Phases of Public Health Nursing.
Public health nursing Includes many
phases, such as bedside nursing, In
which the nurse - lslts the patients
and gives them hourly care as neces
sary; school nursing; cars of expect
ant mothers, babies and small chil
dren ; work In factories and Industrial
centers; rural nursing, and - Instruc
tion In Red Cross courses, homo hygi
ene, home dietetics, cere at the alek,
and various other terms of commu
nity service.
To all American women the Red
Cross sends this message:
If yon are Interested In nurtlag
so a profession, enter one ef the train
ing schools for nurses, many of which
offer scholarships, and specialize In
public health work. If you are al
ready a graduate nurse and anxious
to enter this .field, the Red Cross has
scholarships and Ions funds which
will equip you for this work. Wives
and mothers are urged to take the Red
Cross Course of Instruction In Home,
Hygiene and Care of the Sick so that
they will be able to maintain to the
highest degree the health end te nurse
members of their honsehold tn time of
minor Illnesses."
Throughout the length and breadth
of the land the American Red Crane,
spreading the gospel ef good health, Is
sounding a call to-American woman to
sdopt the study of nursing, either to
join a profession which Is dolly be
