A vision of flying golden enris and
short ruffled skirts, ahe flew toward
her pet, and had him In her arms.
Then tear-fllled, the child’s blue eyes
sought Caro’s.
“I’m sorry,” she sold, "that you can’t
have Fidget, hut—I love him. And
I haven’t got anything else to lore."
The Dalton heiress nodded under-
standingly; her guardian noted In dis
tress that her eyes were also filled
with tears.
Suddenly. Impulsively, the girl’s
arms closed tight about the childish
form.
“Dear,” said Caro, "do you suppose
that yon could possibly learn to love
me? Would yon like to come and Uve
In a big, stone bonse with a garden;
would yon like to he—my Uttle sis
ter?”
“Caro!” David Blair expostulated,
"think seriously what you are offer
ing.”
“I do think,” the girl answered gutat-
ly. The old twinkle came hack te her
eyes. “Marietta will be more satisfy
ing than Fidget,” she said.
And as he stood looking down upon
the two, David Blair’s face softened
lotto a great tenderness.
"I am afraid, Caro, that I have
never known the real you,” he said.
And the glrl’a eye* again raised ta
bis, reflected their radiant light.
