Entered in the Postoffice at Douglasville, Ga., as second class matter.
There are many people who simply couldn’t exist if they didn’t
have something to worry about.
Any man who has plenty of push can get along without a pull.
Before the war the annual expenditures of all government ex
penses amounted to about $1,500,000,000. Now the annual inter
est and sinking fund will amount to something like $1,600,000,000.
United States Senator Miles'*Poindexter has announced that
he will be a candidate for the Republican nomination for the Presi
dency in 1920. ,
That building material will never be cheaper again is evidenced
by the fact that the lumber supply in the United States will be en
tirely exhausted in 150 years.
It looks very much like many weekly papers will be forced to
suspend publication for lack of paper. We are fortunate in securing
enough to last till about Christmas, and hope by that time it will
be more plentiful.
We read much of the value of will power but what many of
us need most these days is ‘‘won’t power.”
The State i.ktx Commission has begun its work of fixing a uni
form assessment on land in each county. Last week the rate was
fixed in several counties east of Atlanta as follows: Walton, $65;
Green, Newton and Morgan, $50; and Jasper, $25.
The country as a whole is behind President Wilson in trying to
avoid the coal miners’ strike. It would be a crime against humanity
to shut down the mines as winter approaches.
President Wilson vetoed the war-time prohibition bill, but
congress only took three hours to pass it over his veto.
Some people are like cider—sweet until they begin to work.
The daylight saving law', ended last Sunday morning at two
o’clock and the country is once more on a basis of standard time.
It has been discovered that the wool going into a suit of clothes
retailing for $50 only costs $4.50. $45.50 for manufacturing and
marketing a product worth in the raw state only $4.50 would inui
cate that there is sortie profiteering somewhere.
The Red Cross drive for a million members will be on in a
few days. Everyone should join this worthy organization which
has done and will continue to do so much for suffering and dis
tressed humanity. . l<t
Carroll county voted for road-bonds last Friday, 3,417 and
only 214 against. ,
/ With cotton bringing around 40 cents, Douglas county farmers
v ‘ have money in abundance.
Wheat sowing time is right on us. Every farm should produce
enough for bread. It will lower the h. c. 1.
We understand there will be another crew of graders on the
Bankhead Highway in a few days.
There is no reason why Douglas county should not grow cot-
''ton profitably, in spite of the boll weevil. Small crops well worked
and heavily fertilized is the remedy.
BIG RALLY AT LITHIA SPRINGS
All the Methodist Churches in the
Lithia Springs charge will come to
gether on November 6th, and hold a
big rally in celebration of their
Centenary movement.
They mad# subscriptions of cotton
patches and Mr. Pat H. Winn ginned
the cotton free, and on the above date
they will come together, have an all
day rally with a basket dinner, sell
their cotton, have some good speeches,
and make it an enjoyable occasion.

__ Grain and hay crops, pernianent pastures and live stock, with
it smaller acreage of cotton, will make farming the most profitable
business in this country.
There has been much complaint from, the railroads about boys
and young men swinging moving trains. The marshal has been
instructed to arrest everyone swinging trains and the mayor will
assess heavy fines. Sufficient warnings has been given in the past
and the law will be enforced to the letter.
The first circus in many years will exhibit in Douglasville to
day. The Walter L. Main Show is here and the largest crowd in
years is here to see the parade and enjoy the performance.
It is thought more than probable that Governor Dorsey will
grant a narole to Mrs. Godbee, who is serving^ life sentence f
the murder of her former husband and his wife.
Miss Mildred Rutherford, historian of the United Daughters
of the Confederacy, is making a strong plea for authentic history
of the Sixties^for use in the public schools of the South. Her plea
that the boys and girls M the South be taught the truth will no doubt
arouse Southern educators to a sense of their responsibility.
A Bibb county hoy became a member of a pig club and now has
in bank $1,000 as his profits from raising pigs as a side line. An
other boy in Cordele is working all day at his job in the city and
looking after a small farm near the city for which he is paying cm
the installment plan. These are the kind of boys who make their
mark in the world. —Athens Banner.
