Atlanta Overall club pledged to “don

Hope To Go To Macon In Trucks
ALIuntu.—Great hopes were raised
at tlie scoutmasters’ meeting whe
was hinted that the Atlanta council
may bo able to secure army trucks to
take the scouts to Macon. If this
scheme can be put qcross, It will mean
that snores of boys will be able to go,
who did not previously feel that they
were able to pay the high railroad
fare. While arrangements have not
as yet been completed, all the officials
connected with scouting seem to think
that no trouble will be met when the
army officers are approached. If the
plan goes through, It Is understood
that tho trucks will leave Atlanta
about 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon,
each boy carrying his own supper, and
the truck train will arrive in Macon
shortly after dark, In' time for a good
night’s sleep before the opening of the
rally Thursday.

Atlanta.—Jazz par excellence, jazz

famous W. C. Handy, famed for his
well-known offering of syncopation,
“The Memphis Blues.” The boys at
the prison were so entirely and un
reservedly captured by the melodies
that the hand tromboned forth exaetly

let them stop. The visit of Handy's
band to the Atlanta prison is an an
nual event, and Is one which is always
anticipated with exceptional enthus
iasm. The performance was made
more enjoyablo by the several jig,
buck and wing and clog dances given
by Nettie Perry.

Greeks Celebrate Their Independence
Atlanta.—With a big parade, follow
ed by patriotic exercises at the au
ditorium, local Greeks on Sunday cele
brated the 99th anniversary of Greek
independence. Addresses were deliver
ed Uy Governor Dorsey, Mayor Key
and L. Chrteunthopoulous, Greek con-
. sul at New Orleans. A number of
Greek nutional songs and anthems
were sung ut the exercises. Three
leading Greek societies took part in
the parade, which numbered several
hundred marchers, besides a lurge
number of automobiles. The Greek
nutionul colors alongside of Old Glory
led the parade which' started at the
Greek -church on Gurnett 6treet und
proceeded through the principal
downtown streets, terminating at the
auditorium.
Young White Man Is Shot To Death
Swainsboro. — Arthur Tanner,
young white mun, was found in the
edge of town, with his head shot off.
The ground wus litered with new play
ing cards. The shotgun was found
broken in half near the dead man’s
body. Tunner was a veteran of the
European war and only returned to
his home here a few weeks ago. It is
known that when he left home he had
considerable money. When his pock-
eta were examined after the killing a
square of tobacco and a small box of
matches wire all that was found.
Two Killed When Train Is Derailed
Atlanta.—John A. Acree of Atlanta,
engineer, and R. E. Coin, fireman,
also of Atlanta, were killed and ten
passGiigers hurt when local train No.
24, on the Southern railroud, en route
from Mucon to Atlantu, wus wrecked
near Ellenwood. The locomotive of
the train turned completely over,
crushing the occupunts of the cab be-
nouth it.
Ellenwood is about thirteen miles
south of Atlanta. Although most of
the pussengers were shaken up and
some were bruised, officials of the
road and those who were on the
scene said none were seriously hurt.
Passengers reached the • city late.
The cause of the derailment has not
boon determined, according to a state
ment given out by railroad officials.
The train was running at a moderate
speed and was derailed while passing
a water tank, the statement said.

Completed Plans For $50,000 Drive
Atlanta.—Members of the campaign
committee of the North Avenue Pres
byterian church, which expects to
raise $50,000 within two hours Sun
day ufternoon have completed their
plans and are now ready for the
shortest drive yet to be mude for
church funds.
The duy will begin with an early
morning prayer service at the church
at 8:45 o’clock, Sunday morning at
which the men of the church will
gather. Afterward tho members of the
campaign committee will meet in the
church house for a brief session and
at 11:15 o’clock the 122 men on the
committee will march down the main
aisle of the church to special seats re
served for them. The entire morning
service will be given over to the
every member campaign, though no
ffort will be made at that time to
secure pledges.
Peach Trees Die From Sharp Cold
Atlanta.—That thousands of peach
trees were killed outright by the sharp
cold of March 1, following warm wet
weather the latter part of February,
was the report mado by Assistant
Stato Entomologist W. V. Reed, on
his return from uu inspection trip in
Talbot county and Upson county. Mr.
Reed had been asked by C. W. Math
ews, a large orchurdlst of Woodland,
to Inspect his trees and tell him why
they were dying. Mr. Reed said that
he Inspected orchards near Woodland
and Thomson containing about forty
thousand, and that of these, fully
thirty thousand were "winter-killed.”
Mr. Reed said that lie had heard re
ports from other sections of trees dy
ing, and that he had no doubt that
muny thousands of trees in Georgia
were killed by tills cold spell.
Mrs. Bradstreet Again Free
Atlanta.—Mrs. Catherine Bradstreet,
who has featured prominently in tha
trial of William B. Green, former of
ficer of the Fairhurn Bunking compa
ny, charged with embezzlement of the
funds of that institution, has been
released from the Fulton county tower.
Mrs. Urndstreet’B bond, which was
originally $10,000, had been reduced to
$2,000, and was made by her father,
A. P. Queen, of Panthersville. Green,
who was convicted of the embezzle
ment charges against him and sentenc
ed to five yeurs' imprisonment, is
in the Campbell county Jail pending
hearing of his motion for new
trial and lunacy proceedings which
have been started against him by his
family.

Atlanta.—W. L. Simmons, secretary
and treasurer of the Brotherhood of
Locomotive Engineers and Firemen
of the Southern road in Atlanta, has
received a telegram from Warren S.
Stone, grand chief of the union, urg
ing the Atlanta men to remaiu at their
posts und submit any wuge requests
to the board named by President Wil
son. Mr. Stone flatly repudiated the
outlaw” strikes in the East and the
West.

Drowned When Bateau Capsizes
Lincolnton.—Adam Harnesberger.
former tax collector of Lincoln coun
ty, was drowned at the mouth of
Wells creek, about ten miles east of
Lincolnton, just where the creek en
ters the Savannah river. He was
crossing the stream, which had be
come swollen from heavy rains, in a
batteau, with two other men, and a
drifting log struck the batteau. cap
sizing it. Mr. Harnesberger was 82
years of age and came from' one of
the most prominent families in Lin
