To Keep American Ships
on the Seas
For the first time since the Cflvll War we have a feal
merchant marine. It cost us $8,000,000,000 to get it.
The farmer, manufacturer, laborer—every American is
Interested in holding our position on the seas.
Af a first step in this direction it is necessary to modify
those articles of existing commercial treaties which have
operated to thwart the upbuilding of our merchant marine—
By giving tlie notice of termination for which the several
treaties provide.
This action is directed in the constructive Shipping Bill
now before Congress;
Which declares it to he the policy of the United States
“to do whatever may he necessary to develop and en
courage” a merchant marine.
This policy deserves the support of every American.
Lacking (his support the present effort to maintain our
merchant murine may sutler the fate of many ineffective
attempts of tlie past.

SUGAR FROM SAWDUST
Cheer up, good people of Douglas-
ville, for relief is now fh sight! News
dispatches out of Pittsburg are to
the effect that a scientist of that city
has discovered a procesr. by which he
can make sugar out of sawdust—and
retail it for less than a tiickel |a pound.
Sounds too good to be true, dqesn’t it ?
Anyhow, the Pittsburg mail is said
to have shown a sample of saw-.
dust-sugar, or sugar-sawdust, just
whichever you want to call it, and it 1
is declared to do the work intended.
Of course he refuses to reveal the
secret. And why not? Who wants to
see all of our shade trees chopped
down and used up for sawdust? Who
wants to have to quit work now when
production of other things is so badly
needed to take a rip saw and get out'
enough sawdust to make sugar for
the breakfast coffee? ’Not only that,
but who wants to be heartless enough
to break the hearts of poor, sugar
barons who are only robbing the
American people at the rate of a few
million dollars monthly? | and work out his wife’#.canning prob-
No sir, we don’t propose to take lems bjj^ sawing up An old rail fence,
any stock in this new sugar discovery.. don't propose -to - start in asking
We’ve had too many disappointments Homeone to pass the sawdust until
in life already to be led into another ,
... ... . . we KNOW the sugar barons are dead
one now like a lamb to the slaughter. %
We refuse to Relieve the .time has arj d a pl ace wheKe ice water
come when a man can take a rip-saw to be a premium.
