We make this statement after read.
*ng that a Kansas tenant farmer with
five children recently left the farm
and moved to a nearby town because
he could get a little higher wages.
He had been managing a well-equip
ped farm. .His family lived in a well,
built, comfortable house of seven,
rooms, and his rent was free. Hd
also had milk and butter, chickens
and, eggs, the use of a horse and buggy
| and two hogs he would have slaugh-
' tered next fall for his winter meat.
He also hrtd a salary of $100 a month.
| When he gets to town he is going
: to find that, not being a skilled me-
■ chanic, he cannot hope for better pay
! than six or seven dollars a day. He
| will have to pay at lest $25 a month
I rent for a mean little shack barely
| large enough to house his family com-
• fortably and scarcely fit to live in.
| When his children are not in school
| they will roam the streets, for there
is nothing else for town kids to do—
the law forbids their seeking jobs
until they are 16 years of age. He
j will have to buy everything his fam-
I ily needs to eat. His wife will be
I unable to raise any chickens except
jin a little pen. Yet the town adven
ture looks attractive to him, he is
restless, and he wants a change.
And he is only one of thousands
who are doing the same thing. That’s
why such a move is endangering the
' general welfare of the entire country,
j That’s why we’re not getting back
( to normal prices as rapidly as we
J should.
