Smith Men Use Falsehood
To Bolster Dying Campaign
Atlanta, August 31.-j-In a des
perate, eleventh hour effort to ap
peal to public prejudice, Senator
Smith’s campaign managers have
scattered broadcast over the state, a
report to the effect that Governor
Dorsey has discharged a white florist
named Grant and put a negro in his
place.
This, of course, is a falsehood out
of the whole cloth, and Senator
Smith’s managers know it. But like
th<fe drowning man grasping at a
straw, they will stop at nothing 'to
bolster up the fading claims of their
dying candidate.
The truth of the matter is, as
stated by T. E. Massengale, keeper
of public buildings and grounds, that
the position of florist was abolished

deal with these matters, and ought
to do so free from anger, and in an
ernest effort to exercise wisdom, jus
tice and moderation, and to afford

it will be the most important Con
gress that has ever assembled. This is
an important district, and the repre
sentative to be chosen ought to take
a position worthy of the district, and
have an important part in shaping
the policies of the Government. He
ought not to feel justified in leaving
Washington during the sessions of the
House to gallop about the country on
private affairs; but should stay at
his post and attend to his business.
]f the people should think me quali
fied to represent them properly, I
shall feel deeply honored, and will
serve them with industry and such
ability as I can muster.
In serving the people by looking
alter their affairs in the different
Government departments, it is nec
essary that the representative be fa
miliar with the laws applicable to
each, and that he secure and retain
the confidence and respect of the
heads of departments. I think I can
measure up to these requirements,
and it will not be necessary for the
people to employ someone else to at
tend to any duties for me, either in
or out of the House.

must rely upon the people to manage ,
the campaign for me. The only thing ;
I know how to do in politics is to!

I cannot engage in violent and abusive j

any good to those who indulge in it.

I have endeavored to serve my country i
loyally in the past, and shall so con- j
