Those Left in Cut-Over Lands Are In
Demand—Yield Many Valuable
Products.
Inerensrd demand for naval Ftores
and 11 slight falling off in tin* supply
have together railed attention to the
value of the stumps left In tli• • fields
in cut-over lands of the south. A
Washington letter of July 0 told of
the result of Investigation by Clement
S. Coker, vice president of the south
ern settlement and development or
ganization. in the South Atlantic
stall's, from which lie learned that the
stumps left in the fields do not die
with the cutting down of the tree. hut.
on the contrary, continue to draw from
the soil sap rich with the elements of
naval stores.
From these old stumps may he dis
tilled some twenty or twenty-five dif
ferent by-products, Including rosin,
turpentine, pine and other oils, acetate,
tar, pitch, alcohol and others. By one
process rosin and paper pulp may be
procured. Other processes leave a
residue of valuable charcoal It seems
that the destruction by fire of these
stumps In the clearing up of the land
is uneconomical. They can be sold for
enough to pay for the clearing and
leave a surplus, so that we may yet
see manufacturers of naval stores bar
gaining with the owners of cut-over
land for the stumps upon It and ex
tracting them themselves.

GIVE COLOR TO LANDSCAPE
Thounh the Daisies Grow Like Weeds,
They Have a Beauty Too Lit
tle Appreciated.
They lift their heads to heaven,
seeking to mingle with the stars—mil
lions of them, scattered in wild profu-
slnn over meadow and pasture land.
Men walk on them, tramp them down—
but they rise again, serene, confident,
searching the light which gives them
life.
Daisies! Our fields are full of them.
From afar their white heads give color
to the landscape. Their yellow cen
tered blossoms, blown by the wind,
wave obeisance to the day and. by
their graceful beckoning. Invite us to
take them home.
Daisies! Our empty vnROs call for
them; our umbrella stands, our jardi
nieres, yearn for their beautiful
blooms. And they are so near to us, so
easy to get, that it seems a pity to
waste their beauty in an unfrequented
field.
Get them for the house, for the office,
to wear. Even though like weeds they
grow, God’s love shines from their
luces and blesses the corner they fill.

JUNIOR RED CROSS IN
ACTIVE IN EUROPE
Garden seeds for Polish orphans,
milk for anaemic Greek babies, car
penters’ tools for Czecho-Slovokian
cripples—these are only a few of the
gifts that young Americans are send
ing to the war-crushed children of the
Old World.
Through the Junior Red Cross the
hoys and girls of the United States
are giving a fresh start in life to little
war orphans scattered all over Europe.
They have set up orphans’ homes in
France, school colonies In Belgium and
Montenegro, and day schools In Al
bania.
They are senfling dozens of young
Syrians, Montenegrins, and Albanians
to American colleges In Consmntinople
and Beirut, and maintaining more than
a hundred orphans of French soldiers
at colleges and trade schools. In or
phanages and farm schools up and
down the peninsula of Italy there are
nearly f>00 wards of American Juniors.
Last winter a thousand Freneh chil
dren from the Inadequate shelters • f
the devested regions were sent by the
Junior Red Cross to spend the ro d
months In warmer parls of France.
At the same time five thousand little
Relglans were having a hot lunch every
day at Junior Red Cross school can
teens.
American school children have al
ready raised something like a million
dollars for these enterprises, and they
are still hard at work.
In Chino, through campaigns of ed
ucation, the Junior Red Cross Is help
ing to combat widely prevalent blind
ness and cholera.

But for timely assistance of the
American Red Cross during the last
year, a large proportion of the 20.000,-
000 population of the Balkan States
might have starved or perished from
disease or exposure. Six million dol
lars worth food, clothing and medi
cal supplies have been sent to the Bal
kans— Roumania, Bulgarin, Albania,
Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Greece
—since the beginning of Red Cross re
lief operations In Central Europe,
while millions of dollars worth of food
alone has been sent to the needy In
these stntes.
The money expended by the Red
Cross In this stricken portion of Eu
rope has been used to set up hospitals,
orphanages, dispensaries, mobile medi
cal units and to help In the general re
construction of devastated areas. Amor-
Hcnn tractors and other farming Implex
ments have been sent to the agricul
tural regions where aid has been giv
en In plowing the land.
By the last of this year probably
all American Red Cross agencies ad
ministering relief in Central Europe
will have withdrawn. By that time, It
Is believed, the people will hove ap
proached a normal state of living and
will he able through their own agencies
which the Red Cross has helped set
up to provide for themselves.
