JEWELS USED IN WATCHES
Hard Substance Is Needed to With
stand the Constant Friction Which
Wears Away Moving Parts.
The principal reason for the deteri
oration of any piec-s of machinery is
because the constant friction wears
away the moving parts and interferes |
with the regularity of the mechanism.
watch, being a machine in which
absolute uniformity of speed Is essen- f j
tinl, it is necessary to reduce this
friction to a minimjim—either thspugh
constant oiling, the use of ball bear- j
lags or some very hard material which
will withstand the wear and tear of I
constant friction. The first two of
these methods are not feasible in so
small a piece of machinery ns a
watch, so certain very hard jewels are
placed at various-points to counteract
the rubbing caused by the moving
parts.
Watches are generally equipped
with 7. 15,'17, 18 21 or 23 jew-
| els, the 15 and 17-Jewel types being
I the most popular. Intrinsically, tin*
I jewels used in the manufacture of
| watches are of little value, but from
l the standpoint of service and the spe-
I cillc purpose which they serve they are
I invaluable. The jewels usually used
I in watchmaking are the hardest of
the precious stones, diamonds, sap-
i phi res and rubles, and of these the
l most generally used is the sapphire,
j which combines hardness with com-
i pnratively reasonable price.
Women Now Eligible to V. C.
A royal warrant consolidating and
extending provisional royal warrants
regarding the Victoria Cross was pub
lished recently in the London Gazette.
The principal feature Is that women
are now made eligible for decoration,
It being ordained that matrons, sis
ters, nurses and the staff of the nurs
ing services and other services per
taining to hospitals and nursing, and
civilians of either sex serving regu
larly or temporarily under the orders,
direction or supervision of any of the
armed forces of the crown, shall he
eligible to the cross. v
Musical Street Criers.
In Charleston, even the chimney
sweeps are muslcnl, and as their tiny
faces appear at the top of the chim
ney they are sweeping, you hear:
“Itoo roo” sung out over the sounds
of the street below. Also to this tribe
the charcoal hoy belongs. He drives
into’ town a tiny donkey hitched to a
tiny two-wheeled cart. The cart anil
load are black, the donkey Is black,
the hoy is black and the only other
color that you can see In the whole
outfit is the whites of the hoy’s eyes
ns he rolls them around and calls the
eerie, long-drawn-out “Clmr-coal !’*
You wonder which is the sadder and
.blackest, the driver, the driven, cart
or contents, ns they wend their soli
tary way onward, crying ever that sad,
minor wall of ehnr-coai 1—Charleston

"Ziron Did Us Both Good,” Writes Mr. Gentry,
of Norerie, Tenn.
r ’ Is a well-known medical fact, that
iron is a necessary constituent of the
blood, and that blood lacking iron is
the cause of many troubles that only iron
will cure.
^jron, a scientific compound of iron
with other valuable ingredients, is the
remedy to take when your blood needs
more iron, and your system requires a
Ionic. Ziron is mild and harmless, does
not stain the teeth, and is good for chil
dren as well as adults.
Mr. P. G. Gentry, of Norene, Tenn.,
writes: “Ziron Iron Tonic lias made good
in my family. I have used it to a very
great advantage to myself and my 14-
year-old boy. It did us both good. I
think it is a good medicine for what it it
recommended.”

Owner of Radiolite Timepiete Is Also
Possessor of Vast Power
I ' Plant.
The possessor of a rndlolite watch
or one having a radium dial by which
the time can ho detected at night, Is
also the possessor of a vast power
plant of no mean proportions, accord
ing to a writer in the Electrical Ex
perimenter. There Is sufficient radium
on vour watch to haul your train
home if it could bo properly applied,
says this author.
As the matter stands, the innocent
looking radium dial does not seem to
possess any extraordinary amount of
concentrated energy, but this is only
apparently the case, and not actually
so, for the reason that, while the
amount of activity manifested by (lie
radium* paint on the dial is small, this
effect will keep up for 2,500 years,
provided the zinc sulphide, with which
the radium Is mixed so as to produce
a glow, holds out tlmt long. The zinc
sulphide in most cases gives out in
about eight to ton years.
Now, if we could Imt find a way to
make the radium release all its energy
In a few hours, Instead of spreading it
over 2,500 years, it would not be diffi
cult to make a motor that would util
ize this energy.
