women of the south show one-half the
enthusiasm in the Fourth Red Cross
Roll Call that children of the south
are displaying in renewing their al
legiance to the Junior Red Cross, the
southern division will show a record
number of Red Crfiss members when
the Roll Call ends.
Truly, children are learning the way
for the grownups in joining the Red
Cross, according to figures given out
today at. Red Cross division headquar
ters in Atlanta.
Reorganization of the Junior Red
Cross was begun wlion schools opened
this fall. Now, although but little
more than a month has passed, more
than twenty thousand children in the
southern division have renewed their
membership in the Red Cross, and be
fore Christmas, it is expected triple
that number will have enrolled.
The Junior Red Cross, while auxil
iary to the American Red Cross, is a
separate and distinct organization,
with its own program of service. It is
organized through the schools, where
.it is one of the most popular and high
ly regarded of student activities. The
Juniors have their own "roll calls”,
the time varying with the different
schools.
Many Juniors had their "roll calls’
when school first opened this year.
That the children arc more enthusias
tic than ever in Red Cross work is
demonstrated by the fact that, while
less than 2,000 had joined the Red
Cross by November 1. 1919, more than
20.000 have joined already this year.
Last year the Junior Red Cross in
the southern division had a total mem
bership of 162.807. Judging by the
way in which children are enrolling
this year, the 1920-21 membership will
go well beyond 200,000.
The purpose of the Junior Rod
Cross and it^ activities could not he
belter explained than by James X.
Rule, national director of the Junior
Red Cross. He says:
"The Junior Red Cross is tlie child
hood of America mobilized through the
schools—public, parochial and private
—for the purpose of inculcating ideals
"’’and habits of service among children
the world over, with the idea that the

ers, there had sprung up—or rather
revived—a deep devotion to the chiv
alry which had done so much in the
past, and whose traditions had in
grafted grace into history and breathed
reality into song.
To this feeling, tills principle, Scott
had ministered in his poems; and now,
acknowledged head of the romantic
school, lie resolved to extend its lim
its. beyond the ballad to the narrative
poem and use prose as the more suit
able medium, lie strove to delineate
the past as it seemed in the eyes of
men who were dubious of the present
and afraid of the future—noble, state
ly, glittering and gay, with the pulse of
life ever heating to heroic measures.
His view of feudalism in "The Talis
man," “Ivanhoe’' and "The Fair Maid
of Perth” was not: the caricature n
few preceding authors had drawn, hut
a portrait—faithful, if idealized.—

DEAL JUSTLY WITH CHILDREN
Almost Every Country Now Has
Courts to Handle Cases of Juve

The example set by the TJni rod
States In establishing juvenile courts

pal countries of Europe. Spain, the
last to full in line, 1ms adopted the
modern viewpoint that delinquent chil
dren should not he treated as crimi
nals, but rather as victims of adverse
conditions and surroundings. In work
ing out the details of the law, Spanish
authorities have followed America’s
experience, according, to information
received by the children’s bureau of
the United States department of
labor.
Under the Spanish law the children’s
judge is not necessarily a member of
Jhe bench, lie is assisted by two ad
visory members appointed by the coin-
mission for the.protection of children.

"Formed in 1917 to help win the '
war, the Junior Red Cross, with a mem
bership ot 10,000,000, produced in
twenty months $15,000,000 worth of
useful articles for American soldiers,
sailors, marines and war - stricken
people of other lands. But in this
service the childhood of America was
only awakened to a consciousness of
its power for good, with the result that
Armistice Day, 1918, sounded to this
unprecedented childhood’s organiza
tion as a clarion call to ‘carry on.’
1 "Since then the Junior Red Cross
has grown to approximately 1,000,000
members; has raised considerably |
more than a million dollars in money;
has produced countless articles of prac

Criticizes Use of Oil.
Dr. White of the United States ge
ological survey has declared It "no
less than an economic crime to use oil
under boilers as fuel.” because the sup
ply of oil was so rapidly declining in
the United States and elsewhere and
because it would soon i»e "a very seri
ous problem as to getting the neces
sary amount of lubricants—which is
really the most Important part of the
rock oil business.’’
Symbolism of Animals.
In the symbolism of animals, the ant
typifies frugality and provision; the
bear, ill temper and uncouthness; the
bull straightforwardness; the bull dog,
pertinacity; the butterfly, sportiveness
and living in pleasure; the dove Inno
cence and harmlessness; the fox, cun
ning, artifice; the goose, conceit and
folly; the grasshopper, old age; the
mule, obstinacy; the owl, wisdom; the
peacock, pride; the swan, grace.
Building a Concrete House.
An English engineer is building one-
piece concrete house walls with a cen
tral air space by erecting the core first
and moving the outer mold upward as
the concrete Is poured.
From the day the TITAN 10 20 was placed on
the market, it has been the leading three-plow
tractor of the world. Over seventy million dol
lars have been invested by farmers in TITAN
10-20 tractors. No other three-plow tractor has
even approached this record. Such a record
could not possibly been achieved, nor could the
TITAN have held its place at the top of the list
if the genuine merit of the tractor had not de
served it.
Farmers over the United States and the world
have demanded and bought tens of thousands of
flTANS and are being served faithfully by them
year after year.
TITAN price is at rock-bottom for TITAN qual
ity and value. It has always been held at low
point by unbroken quantity production and fac
tory economies. And if that price is lowered by
next May, we will hand you a cheek for the dif-
ferece at once.
