AN IMPORTANT MEKilNG
The meeting which has been
called lor l'chruary too tenth
•will be the mo. t important meet
ing held in Douglasville in years.
The outcome 01 the present sit -
nation in regard to ;otton re^ts
largely—we might say, rests en
tirely with the cotton growers
themselves.
A reduction in acreage is very
necessary, and while it may be
true that circumstances will
force a reduction to a certain ex
tent, still it is better that an or
ganized movement be instituted
so as to assure certain and ma
terial results.
Be on hand next Thursday at
ten o’clock if it i,s possible lor
you to be there!

Silk Reeling Discovered
in China Year 1700 B. C.
In tlie garden of IIonng-Ti, emporor
of Chinn in 1700 II. C., Si-Ling-Chi, the
empress, withered the cocoons of the
silkworm and discovered n way to reel
the silk. From this she learned to
weave marvelous, shimmering fabrics
of silk. For many years the secret of
the source of silk was guarded with
the death penalty by the emperors of
Chinn. However, this mysterious cloth
was exported to many countries. And
even to this day Si-Llng*Chl is wor
shiped in China us the “Goddess of
the Silkworms."

Fair Parisiennes With Bobbed Hair
Held High Revels In the Days
of the “Terror."
The most striking historical paral
lel to the bobbed-hair craze is to he
found in the hectic days of tlie French
Directory, when many extremes flour
ished, relates the Kansas City Star.
The I’urJsienne was wearing n wig
known as tlie peruke blond when tlie
m*w bobbed coiffure came in. It was
designated "u Ik Victime” or "a la
SiuTiflce," and demanded a cropping
or a combing up of the Imir at tlie
buck of the head into a wild tangle
or disheveled locks over the forehead.
With such a headdress had Marie An
toinette and many another of the no
blewomen of France gone io the guil
lotine just previously, for flowing hair
had been found to impede the swift
descent of the knife.
That coiffure was quite tlie tiling
at the notorious and gruesome Bui
des Vlctimes, u Jolly little party the
Invitation list of which was limited to
those who had lost a parent or worne
other near relative by the guillotine.
Tlie pleasure-mad throng which
danced amend the ballroom that night
must have presented a weird and W-
rible scene. For each of tlie fair "Vic-
times" beside tier close-cut, eaught-up
locks, wore as other details of her
costume a,scarlet ribbon bound around
her throat and n blood-red shawl
thrown over her shoulders.
Clever Deduction.
Sherlock Holmes-like detectives still
exist. In London, England, an un
known man was run over by a triwin,
taken to the hospital, and although
he never recovered consciousness, lived
and talked In delirium for a few hours.
It was noticed that he counted all the
time, and the doctor perceived that
he never counted above a certain num
ber. He remembered this, and recall
ed that the number was that of tin*
nails In n horse’s shoe. He decided
tlie man must be a blacksmith, inform
ed the police, and his relatives were
found from this little clue.
8heep Shearing in Australia.
Shearers in Australia are paid by
the number of sheep they shear, but
the rAnch helpers are paid by the
week. Averaging everything, from
young wethers, which are hard, to old
ewes, which are easy, a good man will
| shear about 90 to 100 sheep a day.
; The actual record is 327 sheep shorn
' by a Queensland shearer in nine hours.
And other big records have been made.
J r that was probably years back
, with the “blades.”when the fleeces were
ti < -pound and six-pound, and not nine-
' i -slid and ten-pound, as they are to-
' 'lay.
