RELIGIOUS LIBERTY.
One of the most vital issues of
American history is before the people
of the United States today. States
men of integrity, and our leading
thinkers in moral ami religious re
forms, are viewing this matter with
no small concern. The demand of cer
tain clergymen and religious organi
zations for religious legislation may
well be viewed with anxiety. It is
true that this demand for a better ob
servance of Sunday has as its obvious
object better mortil, and hence better
religious conditions; but since that
which is fundamentally wrong sooner
or later works havoc and becomes de-
•tructive of the real object sought, it
is and ever has been the only safe
plan to stand firnilj upon the plat
form of thuL which is fundamentally
right.
upr our sacred principles of liberty.
It is true there is a certain lawless
element that has no regard for either
God or man, and doubtless it is this
class the present day Sunday law en
forcement is intended to strike. But
it must ever be borne in mind that the
enforcement of certain religious views
can never make men and women Chris
tians. It has just the opposite ef
fect, and makes them hypocrites. It
may be very desirable that all men
keep Sunday, but enforced rest floes
not make men Christians. The next
step in forcing men to keep Sunday is
a law compelling men to attend
church. Then the law must define
whether the church he attends is a
Christian church, and there are bound
to be those who will dissent from
this position. Whenever the religious
views of even the majority are crys-
talized into civil laws, persecution is
the inevitable result. • And since like

should obey the laws, not from fear,

The question of the Sabbath being $ Operating a Cash Busi-

render to God, it is not within the
province of the civil power to legislate
regarding it. The question of the j;j Silk

that we should render to Caesar. For
Caesar, (the civil government), to un
dertake to mix the things of God with
the things of civil government, is ai
mixture that is not warranted by the
words of Christ. The whqje drift of
Christ’s teaching regarding Sabbath;
observance was to swing away from;
Pharisecal methods. While men today
are using Christ's example regarding
the Sabbath as an evidence that he
intended to change the day of the Sab
bath, they are certainly resorting to
Pharisecal methods in theri efforts to
bring about a stricter observance of
Sunday. We are quite of the opinion .

George Washington’s reply to the
demands of a certain religious body
was:
“Every man who conducts himself
as a good citizen is accountable alone
to God for his religious faith, and
should be protected in worshipping
God according to the dictates of his
own conscience.’*
And again, the fourth article of the
constitution states:
“No religious test shall ever he re
quired as a qualification to any office
or public trust under the United
States.”
The evidence is too conclusive. Our
government was founded upon the
principle of complete separation ofi.

must firmly stand or we will endan-

visions in His law. Love to God be

and the second like unto it. “Thou

Matt. 22f84-40.
In speaking thru the Apostle Paul
He defines in language unmistakably
clear our duty to the civil government,
and that portion of His law which re
lates to our neighbor, and hence is the
law making province of civil govern
ment. “Let every soul be subject un-

of democracy, and these principles are!
a complete separation of church and
state. Christ taught it, His apostles
taught it, the history of the Christian
church has demonstrated it, and since
we, as American citizens now have it,
let us never be willing to surrender it
to the demands of a misconceived and
a misguided religious zeal.
