AN OLD ONE ANSWERED
The Sentinel was $1.50 a year before the war, dur
ing the war, and after the war. The regular rate
is still $1.50 a year, but this special reduced rate is
offered for the month of JULY because we know
conditions are unusual and we are willing to take
our share of the loss everybody is having to bear.

The Dougl as
County Sentinel
At $1.00 a Year
This is u true story, intended tor
the enlightenment o£ people who
think tlmt the consumer pays lor
advertising., „ ,
A man went into a hardware
store—the proprietor of which does
not advertise—to puchase a patent
ed device of brass which he wished
to use as a drawer handle. The deal
er asked sixty-five cents for it. The
customer eemurred because he had
paid but twenty-five, cents, for the
article in the same store before the
war and he thought the pripce was
excessive. The dealer explained that
the advance was legitimate and that,
anyhow the price coudn't be beaten
as he was able to do business on
smalt profits because he didn’t ad
vertise.
The customer was unconvinced. He
decided that he could do without the
article but as a matter of curiosity
lie wwent to another store whose
advertisements he had noticed at
various times in the newspapers.
And there he found the very same
thing on sale—for twenty cents.
Advertising costs money—but it
sells goods. Do not believe the mer
chant whi argues that he can under
sell others because his sale3 are
smaller than theirs and his method
of doing business proportiinately
less expensive, Cimmon sense should
teach you that the greater number
of sales a dealer makes the cheaper
he can afford to sell. And common
sense should also convince you tha
if advetising doesn’c increase sales
hundreds of thousands of merchants
would have quit it years ago.—Tel
