DOUGLAS COUNTY SENTINEL
DOUGLASVILLE, GEORGIA
SEPTEMBER 9, 1921
ONE COMMISSIONER ACT DEFEATED IN WEDNESDAY’S ELECTION
-a
FRANK I )ORRIS, VICTIM OF CHATEAU THIERRY. BURIED
*
THURSDAY
II1ENSB Cl.oiVD
AT EE.
frank P. Dorris, who was killed
in the battle at Chateau Thierry,
on the battlefield in France and
for whose remains his many
friends have waited so patiently
for, arrived here on Wed. night
of this week.
The body was taken to his
mother’s home and on Thursday
morning at eleven o’clock it was
removed to the Methodist church
where hundreds of sorrowing
friends were gathered to pay the
last tribute of respect.
The beautiful consecrated life
of the deceased was emphasized
by Brother’s Clark, Gilland and
Marvin Williams. In Bro. Gil-
land’s statement "There it not an
interrogative point in the mind of
any one as to where his spirit
has gone”, was as great a compli
ment as man can bestow.
Frank was 27 years old at the
time of his death, which occurred
between June 6-8 1918.
We cannot understand why
one so willing to sacrifice his life
for his country’s cause should be
taken, but God makes no mistakes.
The floral tributes were tokens
■of the great esteem in which he
was held, and as he lay sleeping
among those flowers, that smile
that was so characteristic of his
sunny nature was still remember
ed by friends and relatives.
A body of marines with Mr. W.
E. Huett and S. C. Harding acted
as pall-bearers.
Interment was in the Douglas-
ville cemetery.
Mrs. Whitley En
tertained The
Mrs. T. R. Whitley entertained
the members of The Thursday
Evening Club and quite a number
of visitors Thursday evening,
September 21.
The lower floor was thrown to
gether and decorated beautifully
in vari-colored flowers.
In the dining room, the table
was adorned with burning tapers
and in the middle of the table
was placed the punch bowl, at
which Mrs. Whitley presided.
Rook was enjoyed for some
time after which tiie gracious
hostess, assisted by her sister,
Mrs. Mayfield, served a delicious
salad course with sandwiches and
iced tea.
Miss Ellen Winn entertained
on Tuesday evening of last week
with a prom party at her home
in Lithia Springs in compliment
to Miss Elizabeth Tucker of Tenn.
the guest of Miss Marjorie Up
shaw.

VERY LITTLE IN
TEREST TAKEN
OUTSIDE OF CITY
The election Wednesday went
of quietly, 779 votes being cast in
the whole county, 258 for one
commissioner and 521 votes for
three, thus giving the three com
missioner law a majority of 263.
The small vote indicated quite a
lack of interest among the citi
zens of the county and except
for the those personally interest
ed for or against the change/
very little was done to arouse the
people. The Grand Jurors who
recommended the change, so far
as is known, showed very little
concern about the matter, and
apparently were content to let
the voters decide the question
without influence.
Now that the matter has been
settled to the wish of the major
ity, let us all back it up and help
in every way possible to get the
best roads possible for the most
people and for the least cost.
This surely should appeal to ev
ery citizen and tax payer, and it
is to be hoped that the three com
missioners will have the hearty
cooperation of every body to
these ends.
Mrs. Henry Varner, Misses Es
ther and Oneida Varver, and Mrs
Guy Dobbs of Powder Springs
