THE ROMANCE OF WORDS
“ZOUAVE.”
P RIOR to the World war, one
of the most’dreaded branches
of the French army was tire
Zouaves, a corps which was fa
mous for Its reckless bravery
and fearless courage as It was
conspicuous by’ reason of the
bright red and very baggy trous
ers which it wore. The progress
of military science and the
great increase in the range of
modern rifles rendered the red
uniform a target for all sharp
shooters, so the scarlet trousers
lmd to he replaced by a less con
spicuous attire.
But the Zouaves, as a corps,
continued to live up to their
reputation for during—a reputa
tion responsible for their name,
a somewhat more civilized ren
dering of the tribe-name of the
Zouaoiias, an extremely warlike
nation in Africa. The first levy
of Zouaouas was raised In 1880
by General Clausel and was
originally composed of native
African soldiers with French of
ficers. Gradually, the unlives
were displaced by adventure-
loving Frenchmen and, in 1841,
the corps consisted of three bat
talions—each one of which has
carved a niche for Itself In the
Parisian hall of fame.

Pepto-Mangan in Liquid or
’Tablets—a Blood Builder
Vigor and strength have as
their base rich red blood. Blood
is rich when there are plenty of
red corpuscles, They are the
tiny red cells which swim in blood
and give it its color. Without red
corpuscles blood would be white.
When overwork, or straining,
or illness weakens the blood, it
diminishes the number of red
cells. Without a sufficient num
ber of red ceils the blood becomes
watery, the body weak. Vigor
and strength fall off, so that phy
sical life diminishes like a fading
plant. The physical pleasures of
eating and sleeping and exercise
lose all attraction, There is no
zest in living.
After Glide’s l’epto-Mangan has
been taken for a while the blood
becomes rich with red cells. They
help to nourish the entire system
With good blood at work there Is
