I dowlas county sentinel Arrangements have just been made where the thriving town of Villa Rica is to have a new paper. It is to be run in connection with the Sentinel, but as a seprate de- stinct business proposition. L. T. Dake, son of the Sentinel Editor, will be the Editor and busi ness manager and will devote his entire time to the new enterprise, With the assistnnce of the Senti nel editor and the use of the Sen tinel equipment, we believe we are in position to give the people of Villa Rica and section, the best paper they have ever had. It is the purpose now to begin the first publication next week. Col. S. W. Ragsdale For So!icitor=General Elsewhere in this issue of the Sentinel appears the regular an nouncement <>f Col. Ragsdale, of Dallas, forSolicitor-Geneoal of the Tallapoosa circuit. We are also printing what his home paper, the Dallas New Era, has to say about his fitness for the office. We have only had the pleasure of a limited acquaintance with him, but are favorably impressed with his genial dispositon, his en ergy and resoursefulness and feel quite confident that should he be elected, he will prove thoroughly efficient. Mr. W. H. Johnston, for many years a citizen of Douglas County, died at his home in Cobb County last Friday at the age of 80. Mr. Johnston was a Confederate veteran and Mason and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. His remains were brought to Douglasville Saturday for inter ment and the funeral was held at the Methodist Church, the services being conducted by Rev. W. H Clark and Rev. S. T, GUIand and the burial cermony, by th s Mason ic lodge. Two of Mr. Johnston's daugh ters, Mrs. Mary Cloute and Mrs. ! Hill Entei'kiu live in Douglasville. : He was also a cousin of Mr. R M. i Johnston of Winston, j The funeral was largely atten ded and (he many friends of Mr. ! Johnston extened sympathy to tip bereaved family. Circle No. 2 will meet witn Mrs. G. S. APRIL 11th y Automobile Races Saturday April 22nd Atlanta, Ga.—Negotiations have been completed here for the ap pearance of Sig Haugdahl, world’s speed champion, with his three mile a minute Wisconsin Special automobile, at the auto racing classic to be staged at Lakewood Park for the 1022 season on Sat urday, April 22nd. Haugdahl has agreed to defend his title here and will meet Fred Homey, former champion and ‘‘Wild Bill’’ Endicott, veteran pi lot in a series of three cornered match races. He will also drive bis 250 Wisconsin special against time in an effort to lower his own record. The little Scandinavian not only holds the world’s record for one mile over a straightaway course and on circular trseks but he also holds the Lakewood track speed title. Haugdahl has held the track championship of the world for three years and on April!tb. at Daytona Beach, Fla. be cinched his claim to the speed champion- . ship when he drove his novel speed creation a mile in 19.97 seconds or at a rate of 180 27 miles per hour. He also lowered the records for the kilometer and I he five and ten mile distances. Besides the championship races, several other events will be includ ed on the sports program, includ ing: speed events in which a half score of prominent Georgia driv ers will complete. Each selected a portion and matched it with the person who had the fortune of selecting a portion f tho same rabbit, the hostess then pas sed newspapers.fashion sheets,andpins to tthe toys and told each to select a style and make his partner a new dress. Then the real fun began, such quaint dresses some of the boys did try so vainly to make! Some selected the styles of handsome evening gowns Others selected elegant cape dresses, while still others selected the styles of simple gingham dresses. ••After a short time the boys, for the time being playing the part of dress makers finished their arduous tasks and were ready to display the result of their work. The Judges Mr. Glark and Winnie Bell House and Mary Lewis concluded that Mr. Dun can Baggett, Miss Nell King’s dress maker, was the most competent. Several other games were enioyed then the hoBtess assisted by Misses Luciie Duncan and Nell King served dainty refreshments, and ail had a most delightful time. The next meeting will be held with Miss Blanch Edwards on Frida- evening, April 28th at seven thirty. / are cordially invited. • The Bible study class Circle No. 5 met with Miss Louise Duncan Tuesday afternoon. After a very interesting study in a part of the ho°k of Genesis delecious sand wiches and tea were served. Those present were; Mcsdames Earnest Smith, Sid Johnston, F. M. Winn Jr, Clifford Burton, Mat thew Harding, v. R. Smith, Misses Marie Price, Louise Duncan, Edith Dake. The next meeting will be with Mrs, Matthew Harding, Tuesday P. M, May 2. All members are urged to,be present. Our public schools will close Fri day, May, 19th, and the graduating excercises will | be the following Tuesday night. 1 reparation has already begun on the closing program. On Thursday night, May 18th the music depart ment, under the direction of Miss Adams will give an entertainment. Friday night will be the Senior play under the direction of Mrs. Fat- rica Randolph. Sunday Dr. Grogan will preach the Commencement Ser mon. Monday night the pupils of Miss Adauig will give an operetta- Dr. William A. iSutton of Atlanta will make the address on graduation night Tuesday May 23rd. Thousands of speed fans from throughout the southeast are ex pected to journey to Atlanta next Saturday for the events and ar rangements are being made here to acnommodatethe largest crowd that has ever attended »an event at Lakewood Park. The L. T. L. met Sunday afternoon April 16th at the Methodist Church quite a large crowd was present and a most elpful meeting was enjoyed, Mrs. Hewitt and Mrs. A. W. McClarty were in charge of the program first there was a song, after that Elizabeth Rudd gave a Bible reading and Mrs. Hewitt led a prayer. Some songs and yells were then practiced and the meeting became quite enthusiastic. Oh, hurrah for L. T. L. W hat it will do in the future No one can tell. Boost it, ye people, oh, boost it we we pray. Douglasville will be proud of us some glad day. Dobbs of Atlan ta gave a beautiful dinner Sunday on the occasion of the 68th Birthday Anniversary of Mrs. Dobbs father, Mr. N. B. Duncan. The house was decorated in pWk carnations and Easter Lilies. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Duncan, Mr. Rob Duncan, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Duncan and children of Douglasville and Mr. annd Mrs W. B. Estes and little son of Atlanta. Brother Mitchell departed this life at yiis |home in Paulding County, near Bethel Church, on April 3rd, of this year, being t the time of his ieath 40 years of age. He was bom in Douglas County -ember the 27th, 1881; was mar ■T to Mbs Myrtle Meek 10 years ago, and from this union 8 children were bom, and seven of them are now living 1 . Brother Mitchell was a member of the Baptist church, having joined in 1901. It is a matter of record that he remained a faithful member until the time of his going away. Mahaffy went t Carroll County Monday to visit the chicken farm of Mr. Kenney with a view to erecting some up to date houses here. Col. Hutcheson and Mr. Selnian are going into the White Leghorn busi ness on an extensive scale. Mr. Sel- man and Mr. Joe Cannon recent! rceivedi a large shipmentof day old chickens. We are glad to see these gentlemen taking the lead in what we believe can be made a most profitable enter prise in this section. The writer recently passed through via auto, a section of country sur rounding Morristown, Tenn., and on nearly every farm could bo seen thousands of White leghorns and it is reported that the poultry crop in that section equals and often exceeds the farm crops. If enough people will get into this* business, buyers fom the large cities will be coming here and poultry of all, kinds will be bringing top notch prices. A anice bunch of chickens could be raised on every farm with little extra cost or trouble and there is always a demand for them. Beginning th e first week in May and continuing as long as it seems of interest to the house keepers everywhere amoung our readers, wo are inaugurating a new department in the Sentinel Every on e who has attended any of the Public dinners at con ventions, picnics, singings, etc. are thourshly convinced that Douglas County has ninnv of the best cooks to he found anywhere. What we want to do is to pub lish in the Sentinel frn m week fo "•nek some of the best recipes you have. Almost every house wife has 1 one or mope rer-ipes that she is proud of and prides herself in the preparation os some special Jish- cake, pie, etc. and there are hun-j '•reds of other women who would like to have them. We want you to send us just as many recepes as you wish, just write them out, sign your name and Post office address and we will print several uach week. Other ladies ean dip and file them and soon every woman who reads them aud becomes interested can have a cook book of inestimable value. Don’t wait till the 1st week in May to begin sending them, but start now and lets see how inter esting this department can be made. PREVENT CRIME SUNDAY SCHOOL CONVENTION HOME-COMING SERVICES AT MT. Atlanta, Ga.,—During the eom- ing summer tourist season, the Southern Railway System will sell round-trip week end tickets from principal points to all mountain and seashore resorts in the South at sixty percent of the double one way fare, or a fare and one-fifth, for the round trip. As an illus tration, where the one way fare is $10.00, the round trip fare wtll be $12.00. These tickets will be sold on Fridays and Saturdays and will be good for return trip until Tuesdays, this being a more liberal arrange ment than has ever before been in effect ane one which will enable I the people of the South to make | week-end trips to mountains and seashore resorts at a very reason able cost. GRIFFITH DAUGHTERS WILL ENTERTAIN VETERANS The Memorial Day Service?, as an nounced last week for April 26th, will fumiih many interesting features. The exercises’will be held at the School Auditorum begining at 10:10, where all veterans are invited to as semble. There will be other features of the entertainment also. Col. E. S. Griffith, of Buchanan, announces this week as a canditate f°r Solicitor General. Few men, if any. are better known to the voters than Col. Griffith. Hi* reputation as a lawyer and his a- bility as a stump speaker through out the state are in his favor and we feel assured that should he be successful in his campaign, he will prove thoroughly competent. Lewis, the salesmanager is having phenominal success, in the disnosition of territory. Georgia counties are being sold in groups and about one hundred counties have al ready been disposed of and two states viz., Alabama and lllinoise, have been sold, and in every instance the sales have been made to successful busi ness men which insures early demand for the out put.
