DOUGLAS COUNTY SENTINEL. FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 1922.
WHY —
DO 8TAR8 TWINKLE?
T IIE "stars” are really suns which
are continually throwing off light,
precisely as our sun Is throwing It
off. The light passes through differ
ent layers of air and vapor before It
reaches our eyes. These layers, being
of different thickness or density make
the light of the star appear to flicker
.or twinkle, Just as a motion picture
film which Is run too slowly flickers.
The light Is reduced lu Intensity by
one layer of air and Increased by the
next, with the result that It appears
to shiver—a condition which we have
described by the word "twinkle.”
Dust In the air causes this twink
ling to appear greater, to be magnified
or accentuated. Dust ulso gives rise
to rain, as ench particle of it forms
the nucleus for a rain drop. This,
then, Is the scientific foundation for
the old weather proverb that "When
the starir begin to twinkle, soon the
earth will he a*sprlnkle.”

Healthy and Inaurad.
The people of the United States in
1021 had the healthiest year of their
existence ond bought $8,500,000,000 of
new life insurance.
From Great Imaginations.
"The four greatest Inventions of an
earlier period were all made without
the modern aids to scientific discovery,
but by men gifted with a disciplined
Imagination," said Dr. Frederick L.
Hoffman of Newnrk, N. J., vice-presi
dent of the American Association Tar
the Advancement of Science, in his
address as chnirinnn of the section
on economic nnd social science at the
association's Toronto meeting. He
went on: "Printing, gunpowder, steam
nnd compnss did more to change the
face of the world and tho fortunes
of mankind than electricity, wireless
telegraphy, motion pictures nnd the
grnphophone.”
