MEMORY AND HOPE.
By Miss Null Ellen ('arson. In the Illustrated
Von Hi and Aye.
Seme <>iio It.is Haiti: “Memory
amt 1 1 ope ave sot like stars above
the soul—the one Binning dimly
through the twilight of the past,
.the other lighting the pathway of
the futUMS.” But for me, the star
ol memory is many times brighter
than its companion star, and sheds
its light far back into the dim mis¬
tiness of fMjuiet, peaceful childhood
—growing more distinct and always
ibriglite-iiing, until it roaches the
(border laud of to-day, where it cv,er
stands in its perfect splendor.
Who can .describe t’•<■ exquisite
pleasure of an evening spent watch¬
ing the varied scenes that come and
go on the surface.of a nioiiutry star?
Tho bright faoas «rf our fnicuds, the
scones we visited with Cheng the
gift aces whore we met and parted, are
:all brought out in perfect form;
.and even as we gaze, the very tones
•of tlieir v oices come hack to us in
.all tlieiivswectness. Even tlie forms
and faces of .our dead, under their
iflo.wer covered mounds, are not lost
to .us .forever; fur we have only ,to
(look to memory and see them as
they were ere the death angle
touched them. The o'Ul home
place, with its every detail and
•surroundings, is pictured perfectly
•before the eyes of She wanderer.
While it is true that on the .one
■side of our .memory star are depict¬
ed the pleasures of our life, it is
equally true that-the adverse side
portrays its sorrows and disappoint¬
ments:; and then it is we turn with
•eagerness to the star-of .hope, for it
its “natural for man to indulge the
illusion of hope.” Notwithstand¬
ing that in the midst of life we arc
an the midst of disappointment, yet
■we quickly turn to to-morrow, oven
believing that the star of hope, with
its silvery light, will-guide us to an
•unruffled contentment. 'But even
with hope to guides us and memory
to comfort us, the path of life is
Tough; hat we .must struggle on-
ward and upward, fior
Heaven is not reached at a single bound,
But we build the ladder hy which we rise
From the lowly earth to the vaulted skies.
And we mount to the summit round by
found. *
Jt Nother Teils How9ho Saved Her
Little SJaughter'3 Life-
T am the mother of eight children
and have had’ a great deal of ex¬
perience with medicines. Last Sum¬
mer my little daughter had the
•dysentery in its worst form. We
thought she would die. I tried
•everything I could think of, but
Botbing^seemed to do her any good.
I saw by an advertisement in our
jiaper that Chamberlain’s Colic,
<3bolera and Diarrhoea Remedy was
•highly recommended and sent and
got a bottle at once. It proved to
bo one of the very best medicines
we ever had in the house. It saved
my little daughter’s life. I am anx-
ijous for every mother to know what
an-excellent medicine it is. Had I
known it at first it would have saved
me a great deal of anxiety and my
little daughter much suffering.—
Yours truly, Mrs. Geo. F. Burdick,
