FARMERS AND FARMING.
Farmers arc the happiest people
is the world. They are .engaged in
tire noblest occupation. They ire
honest, upright citizens, or the
majority of them are. Of course
there are some rascals engaged in
farming as w ell as in every other
aeenpation. They :irc all over the
world, and in every, or almost eveiy
occupation, as well as honest,
straight forward men. Where an
honest man goes, a dishonest one
(an go- until he is found out.
1 lien he in left behind. And ho is
flUre to bo lAimd out pretty soon.
l imeivare the most prosperous
people, taking them all round, and
1 ne most contented They live at
home arid know how every dollar
mum obtained—how hard they work¬
ed to earn it—and they strive to
put it to the heat advantage. Farm-
(ng is the standard occupation, for
what would the merchants, . . ,
manufacturers and all other olaaaes
do if it for the farmers? It 1
was not .
is the farmers who hold them up
and draws them on—help 3 them
through obstacles they could not
otherwise pull through, for great
responsibilities lie y i the passage oi
every man’s life, aiid, I believe, the
greatest is in the farmer’s, What
would tiie merchants do without
the farmers,, or the farmers without
the merchants? Of coursu there
has to he different occupations, for
one can’t do without the other, but >
it seems there is getting to be too
in an j merchants for the farmers.
Two many farmers are leaving
the farms and going into the
mercantile business. They should
stay on the farm and make a home
not' only for themselves, but take
Elder Sikes’ advice and be content¬
ed. You can’t be, unless you have
a home arid some tie to draw you
tho re that is stronger than any
other. Thera are several young
men of rny acquaintance that have
left the farm who, if -they were
hack, would stay. Some'of them art
merchants and some are in other
occupations; but if they had the in¬
ducements they have had on tho
farm (hey would not hesitate to go
there. While it takes courage,
eakrgy and porserveranco to make a
aBoeossful farmer, there arc plenty
of ot*r young tn*m endyv ed with
tH*#e gifts that could make a. pros¬
perous living farming; and if you
start for success ton must expect to
ptny its price. You cannot win it!
by feebl* or halfway oft 01 to, neithei
is It to be won by socking it in a
^Uf dij*en different directions, ion
have got to bring to your chosen
ivjprk energy, industry, and, above
all, that, singleness of purpose which
is always willing to devote the
efforts of a life time to its accom¬
plishment. Now,'if you intend to
farm you must throw all the energy
of your being into it, seeking its
accomplishment at whatever hazard
or sacrifice. This, however, does
n'ot prevent us from enjoying life’s
pleasures; hut rather helps us to en¬
joy life move and take more delight
in the pleasures of others. Do not
stand 'waiting and wishing, but go
to work with an energy and per¬
severance that will scatter every
obstacle in your way to success. A
weak and irresolute way of doing
business will scatter your plans as
quick as they are formed. You
must not stand waiting for some one
to'corne and help you over the difti-
cult places. If you do you will
never get over, and will always be
behind. Young man, you can |
make a living on the farm jus* as
well as your parents or any one.
You are capable of more than you i
probably think. If you try you
will meet with success. There is as
many prominent men on the farm
as anywhere else, and you can be
one among them. Your ambition
is to reach the topmost round on
the ladder of fame, and you can,
with energy.
