Using Malls To Defraud.
Last, week T. J. Hammond of
near Glenwood was arrested by r
f niteil States deputy marshal on
the charge of using the mails to de-
irauu. He was taken to Savannah
anti given a hearing before Unitee
States Commissioner Lewis Wed ner-
day of last week. He was bound
over under a $300 bond and the
hearing was again continued last
Saturday at which time evidence
was brought out implicating J. H.
and W. E. Hutchinson two brothers
who are merchants at Glenvvood.
Under the business name of Ham¬
mond goods had bepn obtained from
leading business houses all over the
country, it is claimed, but when the
bills fell due no remittances could
be obtained and investigation failed
to find either the goods or the
supposed business. All kinds of
goods have been obtained by the
use of Hammond’s name on letter
heads and envelopes and letters over I
his name which lead the business I
world into the trap. The amounts
obtained in this wav from individu¬
al firms were usually small, yet the
combined amounts are said to
reach several thousand dollars.
Last Monday J. H. Hutchinson,
one of the brothers charged with
being a party to the fraud, sur¬
rendered himself to a United States
deputy marshal in Savannah. He
was given a preliminary hearing
Monday and was released on $500
bond, pending a continuance cf the
hearing. It is said that W. E.
Hutchinson, the other brother
charged with connection in the con¬
spiracy, will surrender in a few
days, or as soon as he can get a
bondsman.
Postoffice Inspector Peer is at
work to get the evidence, and it is
claimed that others may be impli¬
cated in the conspiracy.
Among the witnesses who have
appeared in the case are the station
agent at Glenwood and R. C. Tea¬
gue, the agent at this place for tha
Georgia <fe Alabama railroad.
Hammond failed to make bail and
was placed in jail at Savannah.—

Let Our Members Be Lert.
The present session of the legis¬
lature will be an important one for
the tax payers and people of the
state of Georgia. A number of
■schemes to raid the treasury are
threatened, and we want to see the
members from Decatur county vote
ngainBt them all. Prominent among
these raids we have—
To entertain Admiral Dewey—
$5,000.
Appropriation for Georgia militia
—*50,000.
Appropriation to send agricultur¬
al orators over the country once a
month to teach the farmers farm¬
ing. Not less than $10,000 would
he called for by this little innocent
raid.
And they do say that the state
will be asked to build a passenger
depot for the city of Atlanta, say,
fl00,000.
All of these raids should be
smashed before they ever get into
the General Assembly—but should
they crawl in there, we should look
to our own representatives, Messrs.
Bower and Herring, to lead the van
in smashing them.
How is there the slightest possi¬
bility of our ever having taxation
reduced, when it is being piled up
mountain high by each recurring
legislature? The raids to which we
have referred would pile up about
$200,000 additional taxation. This
iu addition to pensions $055,000;
school tax >l,o00,000.
Down with the raids and raiders'.

Interesting Extract.
Mr. L. E. Welch has kindly al¬
lowed the Herald to publish an ex¬
tract from a personal letter receiv¬
ed by him from Mr. Robert A.
Been, an old resident of Albany,
who resides in New Haven, Conn.
The extract has reference to the sale
of the estates of Joseph Bond and
Paul E. Tarver, who died in the
’50’s. The extract will prove inter¬
esting reading not only to the voting,
but to the old to whom it will, no
doubt, suggest many pleasant rem¬
iniscences of ante-bellum days. The
extract is us follows:
‘‘I have an old Albany paper of
November, 1859. It was found in
the attic of Mr. Mervin’s father’s
house, where he boarded when I
sent the paper to my sister, it
gives an ueeount of the sale of tha
five plantations of Joseph Bond, to
whom sold, etc. The price paid for
the plantations averaged $23 pet¬
acre, the plantations bringing nearly
$250,000. The paper also contains
a notice of the sale of 500 negroes,
belonging to the same estate, and
also of tho sale of 150 negroes be¬
longing to the estate of Paul E.
Tarver. To the present generation it
would seem rather singular reading.
The paper also contains a notice of
yours and Gen. Morgan’s literary
society, etc.”—Albany Herald.
Some of the Dispatch readers will
remember Mr. Beers as the senior
of the firm of Beers A Brinson,
who did business in Albany before
and up to the war, their store be¬
ing about where Mr. Herman
Parkas is now located on Broad
street.
