Up at the Ensign-Oskamp mills
they make a mill whistle whenever
the sound of one grows monotonous.
The latest has a voice like a fog
horn, with some awful gratings in
the sound: but this fails to suit ex¬
actly Superintendent Tom Williams’
a'sthetic taste. He says the next
one will snatch a person out of bed
and"rush him fifty yards from the
house before he is fully awake.
Elder Albert Sutton has a field of
as fine and as foward oats as you
will find in the county. They are
heading out nicely, and he and Mr.
Dick Tucker became satisfied that
some kind of wild fowls wore de¬
stroying lots of them, so they baited
for them and took turns in watch¬
ing the bait, but the bait would go*
and neither one of them could get a
glimpse of the thieves. One day re¬
cently Elder Sutton determined to
lie outdone no longer, so he took his
gun and rations and went into
hiding for the day in gunshot of the
bait. After a long and weary wait
he discovered the bait-eaters—-a fam¬
ily of jar-birds. Now when you are
near him or Dick you musnt’t even
“think” jay-birds!

BOILER DEALS DEATH.

Blown Into Eternity.
Cecil Ga., April SO.— The large
saw mill of Bray & Sims at this
place blow up this morning just as
the machinery was being started.
Two white men and three negroes
wore killed outright, and a number
of others more or less seriously hurt.
A few minutes later the calamity
would have been much worse, as all
the hands had not yet. taken then-
places in the mill.
The dead are:,
Luther Player, engineer,, badly
mangled.
Hughey Chambers, night watch¬
man, literally torn to pieces.
Gus Nicholson, colored.
Jack Ilaslam, colored.
Will Houston, colored.
Those seriously hurt are:
J. C. Raines, inspector, bruised
all over.
Sebe Alien, colored; will proba¬
bly die.
Wesley McPhaul, colored.
Among the others badly hurt,
though not seriously, are: Frank
Sims, brother of one of the proprie¬
tors; Z, T. Agee, sawyer; Octavus
Smith.
Both of the large twin boilers ex¬
ploded, one oh them being literally
torn to pieces, and the other thrown
nearly three hundred yards. The
mill house and machinery are a to¬
tal wreck, and when one views the
scene of the awful catastrophe the
wonder is that a single human being
escaped alive.
The loss to Messrs. Bray & Sims
is fully $10,000, and is not covered
by insurance. The cause is not
known. Both of the soft plugs are
still in the boilers. The mill will
be rebuilt at once. The dry-kiln
and plaining mill are not hurt.

Mr. R. L. Gregory, on last Sat¬
