Way Result in Trouble.
Mr. D. E. Gaskins, a prominent i
citizen or Wilkicoocuc, was in this
city yesterday and talked, a little
about affairs in Coffee county.
Mr. Gaskins says that politics in
Coffee are so dull that no candidates
have yet announced lor county ofti
ees. In ordering the primary the
executive committee only named the
the state house officers, and it is not
yet determined whether there will
bp any for county officers.
In regard to the census taking, Mr.
Gaskins thinks there may be some
trouble when the time for cnUmeia
'-ion comes. Two negroes have been
appointed.as-enumerators in Coffee,
and it is almost certain that some
people will not permit thorn to come
into their house for that business,
^ ^ will aUow
them to. sit on the hack steps and
take the census if they chose to do
so, but as for going into the houses
<^1 asking such questions as will be
llecessal -y, he has some doubts about
the peoples’ submission.
Dr. Gaskins says there are plenty
of white Republicans.and Populists
who would have been glad to get
the places and even applied for them,
but the Republicans either desired
to humiliate the people or pay polit
ical debts and appointed two-negroes
out of the seven or eight enumera
tors for the county.
He says there is not yet much stir
in regard to the matter, but he sees
signs, of coming, trouble.—Macon

Bells of History.
A peal of bells that have had as
adventurous a career as any that
hang in Old World towers is the fa¬
mous peal of St. Macbaels, Charles
ton, S. C. Five times have these
p K >Hs crossed the sea, once as a heap
0 f mined metal; two armies have
rhey had to encounter or escape; yet
n ; lle bells are still of unusual
j, u nity and sweetness of tone,
Cast m England before the Revo¬
lution and brought over to St. Mi¬
chaels, they met with their fist dan?
ger in that war. That they might
not be-injured they were sen-t back
to England. After the war was
over the people of Charleston wanted j
them, and it became the duty of tbe j
first American minister to
for them, lie was succes'sful, and
amid triumphant ovations they were
escorted-to the church. I
All went well with them until.the i
civil of .
wap, Then, the steeple St.
Michaels was made the target for ;
the cannon of the besiegers. It was
necessary to remove the bells to a !
safer place, and they were sent to j
Columbia. When Sherman’s army :
took Columbia the sheds in the yard j .
of the .State House, in which the; !
bells had been placed, were broken
in to and the hells smashed into
fragments,, while the sheds were set
on fire.
They were not yet done for, how¬
ever, At the close of the war
the pieces were carefully gath¬
ered up and shipped to Liverpool,
together with extracts from tbe
orcl of St. Michaels showing where
the bells were cast and the
tions of materials forming the
ponent parts. !
Upon inquiry it was found that
the firm of hell founders that had
cast the bells were still in existence,
unchanged in name and consisting
of the descendants of the'
firm. The records of the firm con
tained an account of the bells, and I
tbe proportions corresponded with
those in the St. Michaels records. !
Under such favorable circumstances
it was not hard to recast the bells,
Then- for the fifth time they crossed
the Atlantic and arrived safe in
Charleston,

Here is a tip for tlm office seeker:
“Two well known candidates run
ning for the same office were out
electioneering. Both happened on.
the same road a short distance apart,
The hindmost one called at a cer
tain house when a bright-eyed little
came to the door. “Sissy, will
you please bring me a drink of wa
ter?” which.she quickly did. Then
he gave her candy and said: “Did
the man ahead of me give you can
dy: ■iii “Yes sir.” Then ho gave her
a nickle and said; “Did he give you
money?” Yes sir lie gave me ten
cents.” Then picking her up he
kissed her and said: “Did he kiss
you?” “Yes sir, and he kissed ma,
too.”—Call.
