Down to Tuesday of last week,
there was rain every day for about
eight or ten clays. The result is,
grassy crops in all this part of the
State. There are considerable
stretches in which cotton lias not
been chopped out, and the outlook
for it is decidedly unpromising. It
is probable that a good many acres
of cotton will be abandoned. Far-
mers have had trouble in getting
hands even at increased wages, and
some of the most active and best
equipped of them are “in the grass.”

Starvation never yet cured Dys¬

He told it in reply to a question
asked him as to his opinion of trusts.
An unsophisticated fellow went in¬
to a show in which they exhibited
animals and reptiles. Approaching
a box in which was coiled a huge :
snake, the conductor lifted the top,
and the monster raised his head and
shot out his tongue. As quick as
thought, the fellow struck the rep¬

Down in Brooks county week be¬
fore last Judge Candler was holding
superior court, and “in a case of
assault with intent to murder, the
Judge charged the jury at length,
his charge covering the points of
law involved, and instructed them
how to make up tfieir verdict. When
they announced a verdict it was ex¬
actly contrary to his charge, and the
judge told them that if they were
better informed as to law than him¬
self he was not needed there and had
as well adjourn court, lie finished
by telling them that they could go
to their homes, as such jurymen
would not be needed.”
In the superior court in Brooks
county last week the case of M. F.
Jones, ex-tax collector of Brooks
county, charged with embezzlement,
came up for trial. Jones was tax
collector for many year until the
year 1896, when he was found to be
short several! thousand dollars of
thc st:Uc * s money, which, it is alleg-
e ,i ), e fiafi appropriated to his own
use. A jury was secured with diffi-
culty and the case consumed the en-
tire uay. Late that afternoon the
jury returned a verdict of guilty,
but recommended that the defenfi¬
#nt bo punished for misdemeanor,
Judge Gaudier sentenced Jones to
Gvdve months on the public works,
Judge Candler was appealed to place

Mr. Lem Summerlin, marshal at
A' illacooohee, had a narrow escape
from death a few nights ago. Some
negroes were gambling in a house
within the city limits, and a quarrel
arose bringing on a racket. i^ ie
marshal went, unassisted, to quiet
the row, and was met with a dozen
pistols, pointed at his head and body.
Seeing the crowd was too many for
him, he sent for help, and stepped
back outside the door. Pretty soon
two negroes started to leave the
house, and he halted them, when
both began firing on him. lie stood
up to them and returned the fire
holding his ground until help came,
when the negroes disappered. Next
morning one of them was found
with five bullets in him. ranging
from his neck to his toes, but strange
to say, he was not fatally hurt. The
other negro has disappeared, but a
reward of -325 has been offered for
him, and if he is caught, he will
