Mr. John Hogan lost a fine dog
one day last week. Mr. Hogan was.
hunting near Bone Pond, when the
dog tracked an alligator from the
pond to a lake in the swamp near
by, and it is supposed that the dog
lay down in tiw water of the lake
when ho was suddenly attacked by
tile ’gator. Mr. Hogan heard the
cries of the dog and* rushed to the
rescue, but too late. Parties watch-
ing for a chance to shoot the mon-
ster were not disappointed, as late
in the afternoon ho was seen to rise
to the surface with the dog in his
month. But their aim must not
have been accurate, as at last ac¬
counts the alligator was living hap¬
pily and making inroads, upon such
dogs as come near his habitation.
A committee was appointed some
time ago to arrange and set a day for
a grand picnic, to be given at Bear

The date first agreed on was the 18th
of this month, but on account of

The Crpwing of Cassava.
Jackson vii,i. h:, Fi.a ( , July 19.
Editor Tifton Gazettes—I want
to tell the farmers around Tifton
of something which will be to their
permanent advantage.
We have been conducting experi¬
ments in feeding farm animals with
cassava and velvet beans. When
mixed, about 13 per cent, velvet
beans in the hull and 87 per cent,
cassava, we, have an almost perfectly,
balanced ration which will fatten
horses, cows, pigs, sheep and goats
more rapidly than any known food.
It produces pork as firm and white
as that produced with corn.
Upon this food,, horses, mules and
oxen, while working hard may be
kept in tine condition at a cost of
less than ten. cents per head per day.
With the same food pork can lie pro¬
duced at two cents per pound and
beef at one and one-half cents per
With it you can double the
tity of milk and butter produced on
the farm, and at the same
greatly improve its quality at a cost
of live cents per cow per day.
On light, sandy soils well drained
you can produce from ten to thirty
tons of cassava per acre, and the
starch factors pay live dollars per
ton for it, on the cars at planter’s
station, within one hundred miles
the factory. It is worth more than
ten dollars per ton to the farmer
with which to feed his farm animals.
One acre in cassava anti one acre
in velvet beans will more than feed
a horse or mule twelve months.
About six acres of corn is required
to do the same thing.
All inquiries in regard to seed,
preparation of soil, planting and
culture will be cheerfully answered
if addressed to me at Astor Build-
mg, Jacksonville, Fla.
Try a small patch next season,
and when once you have done so
you will never again feed after the
old methods.

Thursday, of last week Mrs. Con-
nor, wife of Mr. Lewis Connor,.who
lives near lnvinvillc on Mr. J. 15.
1). Paulk’s place, cooked some pea
soap for her husband’s dinner. He
has been in bad health for some time,
and thought he could relish pea soup,
but when it was prepared he did not
like its taste and it was set aside.
At supper Mrs. Connor and three of
the children ate the peas. Soon
after one of the children was taken
violently ill. Dr. Julian was sent
for, but the child was dead before he
reached there. The Doctor had
reached home only a few minutes
when he was again sent for. When
he arrived at Mr. Connor’s another
child was in the throes of death, and
soon died. Mrs. Conner and another
child were taken violently sick, but
by hard work they were saved.
The pea soup was cooked in a tin
bucket, and it. is supposed the deaths
were caused from lead poisoning.
It was after the death of the two
children when Dr. Julian learned of
the vessel in which the pea soup was
cooked. From the statement of the
children’s mother, be supposed the
children, were sick from, eating too
much green fruit and watermelons.
Mr. and Mrs. Connor have the
sympathy of all ; in tbei rsad affliction.
