The Party of Lincoln.
In the presidential campaign of !
1900 the Republican party is trading j
on a name once deservedly great and ;
rich with honors, and under the
protection of that name is trying to i
betray the republic for which it stood
in its earlier days. |
The party of Lincoln and emanci- j
pationisnow the party of llanna
and of slavery. Under Lincoln it
stoodfor freedom, for honesty for
sound Americanism, for govermeut
of the people, by the people, for the
people. Under Hanna it stands for
the forcible subjugation of weaker
peoples, for the bastard American¬
ism of empire, for govennent of the
people by the syndicates for the syn
dicates.
All that is left of theparty of Lin
coin is its name. The party name now
is a ghastly misnomer. The party of
Ilanna is not a republican party. It
is the party of empire—greedy, re¬
morseless monarehial in every fiber,
meaning the destruction of the re
publo if it shall be continued in pow¬
er. The rugged truth and strength
and republicism of the Lincoln spirit
are not in it. If Lincoln were alive
to-day the Ilanna plutocrats would
be ridiculing his simple American¬
ism as the folly of a hayseed Illinois
farmer, backwoods railsplitter, a
man who knew nothing. He would
he thought “unsafe” because too
much like the common people whom
the syndicates both flout and fear.
The Ilanna party of tyranny and
of treason to the republic is mas¬
querading under the name of a party
once swayed and directed by Abra¬
ham Lincoln. It must be unmasked,
exposed and removed from power
in the govermeut if the rebublic is
to live. The task is one which would
delight the soul of the one who said
of himself that his life story was
told .in one line—“The short and
simple annals of the poor.’’ The Han¬
na party of plutocrats is using the
name of Lincoln as a commercial and
political asset. On such lips the use
of such a name is sacrilege.—Ex.

following statement,
“A lawyer of Rochelle sent me a
message to meet him at my office at
8 o’clock on the night of August 1st
to get a copy of some papers. I met
the gentleman at my office and ad¬
mitted him into the vault. He then
told me that he wanted a copy of
the voting and registration list. I
refused to give them to him without
legal advice. I was called from my
office and left the door of the vault
open, and was absent possibly two
minutes from my office. I then, on
my return, refused again to furnish
him with copies, and locked the
vault and left for home. On my re¬
turn to my office to-day I ‘opened
the vault in the presence of several
others and found that all the papers
of said primary were gone,”
