Friday, August 17,1900.
We bear but little about the Air
Line road 'these days.
Ocilla is sure to get all the rail¬
roads she needs, and don’t you for¬
get that.
The Chiuese situation is critical,
and startling news may he expected
soon.
Mr. J. A. Woods, so we learn,
found a corn silk in his field the
other day that measured 14-.j inches
in length.
Oh, candidates, ye, whom the fates
have set upon to run the race, may
each of you, (you are but few), avoid
with care a hurtful pace.
Mr. K. L. Henderson has with¬
drawn f rom-the race for sheriff. This
leaves the field to Sheriff Fletcher
and Mr. Dan MuInnis, both of whom
are swift nags.
All the candidate!? cannot be elec¬
ted, but the Dispatch would not
murmur if they could. This paper
has no enemies among the candi¬
dates, and its sympathies are sure to
be with the defeated.
Congressman Brantley will begin
a canvass of the Eleventh district
about September ist. This is not
necessary, though of course the peo¬
ple would like to hear the brilliant
young orator and statesman discuss
the issues of the day.
Frank Stanton dedicated this beau¬
tiful little verse to a subscriber who
paid for his paper:
Ended—life’s story—
For life is but vapor.
His son) is in glory:
He paid for Ids paper.
No candidate has the right to as¬
sume that, because he announced
early and had gotten his plans all
fixed, or rather the votes all fixed,
to insure his election, no other can¬
didate should come out and endeavor
to defeat hi in. There would be noth¬
ing unfair or unjust in holding a
primary a month pryor to election,
because the candidates who annonc
ed early would have as fair a show¬
ing before the primary as those who
had not announced. There will be
no primary in Irwin this year, but
we insist that there would be nothing
unfair in having one.
In speaking of the Georgia Cot¬
ton Grower’s association the Macon
Telegraph says; “The movement
has attracted the attention of the
capitalists of the North, and yester¬
day Mr. Jordan received Utters from
a number of capitalists, who en¬
closed a plan or scheme they had
for assisting the farmers in this
movement. Their plan is to build
Warehouses ail over the country,
store and insure the cotton and lend
money to the owners for 6 per cent,
total. This is about a fourth the
amount that the farmers have to pay
now. The company has millions
■behind it, and asks Mr. Jordan for
his opinion as to their plan, and. trill
probably be ready for business in
time for the next crop.”
Taxically Speaking.
Tax Receiver Paulk has wound
«p his la,,ora a,ld forwarded the re¬
sult to Comptroller Wright Wednes
I day morning in the shape of one of
the neatest tax books that ever went
to Atlanta.
From this book we gleaned the
following interesting facts:.
The taxable property of the county
foots up $20,150,89!), against $20,-
860,303 last year,making an increase
of $70,590.
There are 2,501 voters in the
county, a decrease of 87 since last
year. These are mostly negroes who
went to Florida last fall. There are
1,647 white voters and 854 colored.
There are 11 lawyers, 21 physi¬
cians and 2 dentists in the county.
Amount of tax in default, $8,925.
There are. 312 town lots in the
city of Fitzgerald which have not
been returned fortaxes. in the col¬
ony there are 118 five acre tracts,
109 ten acre tracts and 14 twenty
acre tracts which have not been re
turned, making 505 unreturned lots.
In looking over the tax book we
see on nearly every page the need
of a law that will give the county
a board of tax equalizer's, and we
hope the next grand jury will give
this subject earnest attention, as it
is among the most important that
body could consider. ,
School Closing.
Friday of last week was a notable
day at Prof. E. Jernegan’s school,
near Judge. J. A. J. Nobles. The
closing exercises of tlie school took
place that day, and a hundred or
more people assembled to witness
the Interesting event.
In the examination the pupils,
inostof whom were quite s nihil, show¬
ed careful training, andt heir profi¬
ciency excited wonder.
At noon ihe clever people of the
neighborhood spread a bountiful and
appetzing din iter on a long table, near
tlie school house, and you ought to
have seen that appreciative crowd
turn themselves loose on the great
pans of chicken pie, baked mutton,
beef, fried chicken, good old pone
corn bread, snowy biscuits, pie and
custards, jellies, etc. It was a fine
dinner and reflected credit on the
skill of the ladies of that section.
After the dinner recess, the pupils
and visitors reassembled m the
school house and listened to one of
County School Commissioner Dick¬
son’s solid talks on education. It
was plain, practical and instructive
throughout, and at its close the
speaker received a generous round
of applause
The next speaker was Rev. Mr.
Clark, of Colquitt county, who made
a talk rtiat \\ ill long l>0 remembered. !
At night tlie pupils gave an ex¬
hibition of their skill as performers
011 the stage, Dick Jjiike acting as
clown, keeping the audience laugh¬
ing from start to finish.
'i'lie Bushy Creek Band, under
the able leadership of Mr. Hard
Paulk, furnished delightful music ;
day and night.

At Bowen’s Mill.
Wednesday quite a crowd of Ocilla
people went up to Bowen’s mill, on
pleasure bent, and we risk nothing
in naming it tire most enjoyable pic¬
nic of the year.
The swimming pool was well pat¬
ronized throughout the day and the
merry bathers got all the enjoyment
possible out of it.
Mr. J. If. Powell spent most of
his time learning the little folks
how to swim.
Dr. Goethe seemed to think that
he had a commission to duck the
strongest men in the pool, but slipped
up and—saw some asteroids.
Mr. R. L. Henderson sustained
his reputation as the hardest man in
the county to handle in water.
Mr. T. S. Williams, who lopped
off ten or fifteen years from his age
for the occasion, was the merriest of
the merry and added lots to the en¬
of all.
Messrs. J. W. Winn, W.N. Smith
D. J. Henderson, J. E. O. Guy, C.
C. Mims, J.W. Hill and others were
among the prominent funmakers.
Most of the ladies “took in the
pool,” and seemed to have equally
as much fun as the opposite sex.
Mrs. T. S. Williams was the best
and most graceful swimmer among
the ladies.
The chute was not liberally patron
ized.
About 1:30 a bountiful dinner was
spread and the “audience” showed
its appreciation 11 of the good things 0
