Rest from His Labors
Once npon a' time, an editor died.
This was an nmisnal occurrence. Ed' -
tors rarely over die. Thev generally be¬
come day laborers or ^ millionaires before
that auspicious event winds up their
earthly career. But in this’ instance a
real, speaking, lining, breathing, genuine
editor paid the debt,of Nature. Oh, how
hie other creditors' did envy Nature!
Well, a few days after the funeral the
editor arose, took up his soul, and pre¬
pared for his final journey to hi* allotted
abode; af’er awhile he drew near to the
outer gates of*Hadra. Here he knocked
loud and long. Finally Oor. Nick came
to the gate and asked what was wanted.
The editor told him that he had been
evicted from the upper world j.ml want¬
ed a home where rent is free and fuel
cheap. The devil eyed him suspiciously
for half a minute and then a-ked him
what had been his profession up above?
“Your Majesty."said our friend. ‘I am
an Editor. For yearn I have been—”
“You can’t come in here, then,” said
b's Majesty. “I am ruler here and pro
pose to continue so. Can’t you see that
your advent inside this gate would he
dangerous to the peace and dignity of
my subjects? All those subscribers of
yo«rs who didn't pay for their paper are
in here, and you would not he hero a
week before yon would commence dun¬
ning them, and would cause dissensions,
discords, and the final disruption of my
kingdom.”
“But if I promise—”
“No, sir! you can’t come in here. Co
up there,” continued the devil, pointing
to the Celestial City, there yon will find
all your paying subscribers and no dead
heads, and there you can dwell in peace.
And the heart of ibe editor was glad.
Joyfully he turned aside from the gate,
wended his way up the golden stairs to
enter upon his just reward, whore un¬
paid bills tronhleth not and de’inqnent
subscribers never come —Ex.

One of the elements of our hap¬
piness springs from the xact that we
do not know the future. How
large a part of the pleasure of life is
shattered and blighted hv an unrea¬
sonable anticipation of coming
evil! How much happiness would no
lost if a man knew ho wou'd ho sick to¬
morrow’, that a f tend was to ho s, ,' i kcn
down, flat a mercantile venture was to
go awry, that, tliis or that e\il "as to
come! He would have no heart for the
smile and laughter and sunshine of to¬
day. glad »nd bright though it might he,
if he overshadowed with the cloud of
a certain misfortune that was to come on
the morrow.

There is less drunkenness in the
professions nowadays than ever be¬
fore in the world’s history. There
are fewer drinking clergymen, few¬

journalists, fewer drinking physi¬

as a virtue, hut as an element of
