Last Monday morning Judge O
Seamans, Ordinary of Rockdale
county, appointed R. J. Guam as
Clerk o: Superior Court of Rock¬
dale county, to fill the vacancy
caused by the death of Judge B. F.
Carr. We think the appointment
a jilst one, and what every one
would naturally expect, since
Guinn ran in the nomination held
in this county on the 8rd inst. and
received such a
vote for the same office, And we
have asked ourselves the question
whether it would not be good dem
ocracy io elect in January to the
office of clerk the one who received
next to the highest vote in the pri¬
mary referred to above.
There is more talk about the in¬
dustrial progress of the south than
there has been in a long time.
Why is this? Because, in the first
place, the *»outh really has made
very great progress industrially in
the last ten years, Jand because, iu the
next place, the sou,hem newspapers
have directed attention to the fact and
have announced that duj 'ug the next
four years the south will give more lime
to material growth than to polit.ee.

of friends they decided not to fight, a*d
inour opinion the affair was settled
much more honorably than by standing

Christmas!
At this season of the year it is the
universal custom to give presents.
Everbody gives them. Especially
is this the case iti families. The
different ones like to give each other
some token of their love, but are
often prevented from so doing by
the High prices of gifts at this time.
The things they would like to give
are beyond their means, and they
would rather not give anything than
poor gifts. We can obviate this for
this C hristraas, at least. We have
bought the entire stock of a bank¬
rupt manufacturer of Christmas
goods and are putting it up in hand
some boxes, seven beautiful gifts
in a box. We put up two hones,
one containing gifts suitables for
the members of a family; the other
for friends outside. We sell either
box for 38 cents. These goods,
bought at retail, at regular prices,
would cort many times that. In
ordering, state which box you want.
Remember, the price is only 38
cents, 'Order early, for although
our stock is large, it is going fast,
