ter he seems to have his patrons
aroused, judging from the large
school he has. Sheunan is still
seeking for more education that
he may be more able to teach his
people. W e wish there were more
colored people of Sherman Tur¬
ner’s ambition.
The first bale of cotton market
in Conyers this season was
brought in by Mr. T. C. Kelley,
of Henry county on last Thurs¬
day afternoon. The bale was
auctioned off by sheriff Austin
and D. M. Almand & Sons were
the highest bidders, their bid be¬
ing lOf cents per pound.
Mr. Charlie Granade of Atlanta,
well known to all of our people,
fell from an uper window of a two
story house in that city Sunday
morning and may die from the
injuries he received. The latest
report was that he was suffering
from paralysis of the stomach,
caused by the spine being injured.
My friends and customers are
hereby notified that I have
moved my Shop into the store
formerly occupied by Mr. W. S
Marbut. I am prepared to do
ail kinds of work in my line on
short Notice, and solicit a con¬
tinuance of your patranage.
Respectfully,
J. W. Carter.
Last Monday afternoon light¬
ning struck a car on which Mr. R.
M. Leftwick had, just a few mo¬
ments before, been loading some
stone at Rockland, near Lithonia.
At the same time a bolt struck a
tree about a half a mile away,kill¬
ing a six year old negio boy. The
lightning imprinted on the boy's
breast the picture of a tree, branch
es, leaves and all. We are in
debted to Mr. B. N. Ford for this
piece of news.
The meeting at the Presbyterian
church, after being protracted for
ten days, closed last Sunday
night with fourteen accessions to
that church, one by letter and
thirteen upon profession. Rev.
F. R. Graves, who assisted in the
meeting, preached veiy forcibly,
and his sermons were all excel¬
lent expositions of the scripture.
It is believed that others will
unite with the different churches
as a result of the meeting.

TWO CONYERS MEN.
A correspondent to the Madison
Advertiser, in giving a short his¬
tory of Salem campground and the
late meeting held there, has the
following to say of two of our
most prominent men.
“Mr. Henry Y r . McCord a
prominent merchant of Atlanta,
but whose home is in Conyers, is
one of the prime factors in the
maintenance of this campmeet¬
ing. He is a zealous Christian,
an agreeable gentleman and a no¬
ble man. We hope he will live
to enjoy a great many more camp
meetings at old Salem.
“Dr. Downs, of Monticello, and
Mr. Thomas Elliott, of Conyers,
are two other Christian gentlemen
who do more than than their
share in making the meetings a
success. The deeds of such men
live after them.”

man in the store.

look at present is that they will
all be kept busy waiting upon
customers.
\Vlr« Fencing:.
Question.—I want to put up consid¬
erable wire fence this fall, and I want
your advice as to posts. I have a choice
between pine, poplar, magnolia, sweet
gum and oak; which is best for the pur¬
pose? What is the best treatment to
give the posts iu order to preserve them
from decay? Will small trees cut iu
proper lengths last as long as large
trees sawed or split for the purpose?
Answer. — Among the woods you
mention, good heart pine is a long
ways the best. If you could possibly
get cedar posts they would be the best,
but aside from cedar there is in South
Georgia uo better wood for posts than
the heart of a sound yellow pine. A
good and economical treatment to make
the posts more durable is to apply to
them a heavy coat of tar, covering ev¬
ery portion of the post that goes in the
ground, and for 6 or 8 inches above the
ground. Better still, if you could boil
iu tar for the space of half an hour the
ground end of your posts they would be
rendered practically proof against rot.
The largo trees split or sawed would
last longer than tho trees only large
enough for posts. You will readily see
the reason of this, from the fact that
the small tree would be entirely sap
wood, which rots very quickly when
exposed to the weather, while the posts
from the large tree, being all heart,
would be much more durable. Never
use for posts anything but heart wood.
