HAVE FRITH
Have faith in the future? Have
faith in the land? Stick to it. It
will not disappoint you in the long
run. If bad laws are in the way
they will be repealed, provided y ou
help compel their rtyieul. The g )od
common sense of the American peo¬
ple will right all political wrongs.
Our resources are almost unliuiit
ed, our recuperative powers are un¬
surpassed. The world must have
our products . Conditions are vap
inly changing . Population is now
increasing faster than farm areas,
and demand is rapidly overtaking
supply. The future is bright for
the level-headed American farmer.
He may not get rich, but lie will V e
prosperous; lie can have plenty of
peace. The ambition to be rich
has ruined thousands, and thepos
session of riches thousands more.
It is an unholy ambition, and its
realization is too often accomplish¬
ed by the surrendering of every el¬
ement of true happiness, Be cou
tout with a competence, with plen¬
ty, with a virtuous life, a happy
home, a loving wife, children who
will honor their parents.—Mariet¬
ta Journal.
EXTRAVAGANCE.
The following extracts taken
from Senator Clay's able speech in
the United States Senate recently
indicate extravagance with which
the affairs of this government is
administead. It seems impossible
that wo can keep up our credit at
the pace we are now going.
In 1SG0 at the close of Buchan¬
an’s administration the popula¬
tion of the United States was 81,-
448,221 and the expenses of the
government amounted to only 77,
055,126 or a per capita tax of $2.46
a decrease of four cents over the
administration of Mr. Jefferson.
In 1890, at the close of Mr.
Cleveland’s administration, our
population was 71,208,000, and
the entire expenses of the govern¬
ment was $4.94 per capita, a re¬
markable decrease over the pro¬
ceeding Harrison administration.
The tax payers of this country
paid the enormous sum of $7.87
pec capita for administering the
affairs of this government for the
year of 1899. The head of a fam
lly „lth a wife and five children at
tin. rate ronld pay into the trea
sury $48 to meet the extra! agance
of its bosses.
Placing the population of the
United States for 1900 at 77,000,
000, the , expenditures ot our gov
erumeut, per capita, fot the year
1900, would i be $9.01. A1 The expen
ditures for the year 1901 would he
