THF CONYERS WEEKLY
CONYERS, GA,, MAY 18TH, 1883,
THE PRESS CONVENTION.
VCe spent last week at the ho.spita>
Lie home of Mr. W. B. Langford,
Athens, Georgia, and attended the
meeting ot the Ga., Press Conveo
tion. The bo)s met at Dupree hall
on Wednesday tbp 4 th inst, and ab¬
ler paying their dues, re-electing all
the old ffficers, excepting Messrs
Grubb and Tiiplet, who are new men,
adjourned to partake of the generosi¬
ty of the noble Athenians. We have
visited many places in Georgia on
press excursions and otherwise but
x,o where have we ever mat with si
royal a reception v as at the classic
city.
Her people ave all heart and soul
and ca» arrange more waya to make
a fellow enjov himself than any creax
tures on earth. To Col. Gantt, Col.
Stone, Mayor O. Fatrall, Messrs Rald
ivin. Burnett, Talmage, Pruett, Til¬
ley, Yancr. Cranford and Morton do
we especially return our thanks. We
owe them a debt ot thanks that will
be hard to cancel.
Georgia possesses no placa equal
to Athens in all that goes to make a
first class city. Her merchants are ot
a higher class and sell goods as low
as car. be bought anywhere, Her
newspapers are ol th« best order and
are run by high 'oned gentlemen.
Her schools are superior to any in
the State and equal 10 any in the
land. With her cotton compresses,
grain elevators factories and machine
shop, and hundreds of other indus¬
tries, she is justly the pride if Geor¬
gia. She has more wealth and beau¬
tiful residences than any city in the
state and the most cultivated and
liightoned people. W e expect to
attend other convention* but at no
place do we expect to meet, with such
old timed southern hospitably.
The press conventson having ad¬
journed at Athens to meet at Tallu¬
lah, the association was called to or¬
der by President Es*.ill, after dinner.
The following are the proceedings :
Tho president app.vnted Messrs. E.
P. Howell, Patrick Walsh and It. W.
Grubb, a committee on resolutions,
who reported the following, which
were unanimously adopted :
-- Whvteae, a committee was appoin¬
ted to draft resolutions expressing
the thanks of the Georgia I y ress As¬
sociation for certain courtesies ex¬
tended to the association during Ihe

the association are duo and are here¬
by extended to the Centra', Georeia

Northeastern railroads, for courtesies

2. That we appreciate the kind at¬
tention of the citizens of Athens who
have made our slay in th ir midst
one of the most pleasant reunions of
the press of the state since the organ¬
ization of the association.
3. That we return to Mr. H R.
Bernard, superintendent of the North
eastern railroad, our thanks for the
interesting and entertaining excur

ot Athens we beg to return thank*

occasion,

W. W. Fleming, J. W. A.nderson,
Mr. Walsh moved that a commit¬
tee of five be appointed to request
the legislature to change the legal
advertising law. Thecomtnilteeis a*
follows: Patrick Walsh, T. I,. Gantt,
I. P. Howell, W. T. Christopher,
W. L. Mathews. J. H. Eat ill was
added to the committee.
Mr. Walsh moved that a committee
of three be appointed to arrange for
an excursion to Canada next year.
Committee-. P. Walsh, E. P, Howell
and J. H. Es! il.
The Convention meets next year
in A'lanta.
The no fence idea and the temper¬
ance movement are traveling over
the state hand in hand.
The politicians are putting them¬
selves in order for the coming
nies and religious revivals.
