THE CONYERS WEEKLY
BILL ARP.
Special to The Const tution
Cobo says that folks are talks and
you cant ntako’ em any folkser, X
thinking what a big little w7r <J
every man has of his own especially
every family man. There is not to
fnuch difference no how in the average
oi human If. Ot course there are
some men who do some big things
and make a noise and get a re
puialion, but they are few s.nd far be¬
tween compared with the comm n
run. M >st of us belong to the com¬
mon run and after al 1 i' is the best
run for it is most according touatme
Folks are folks just like horses are
horses, Ive got my little world of
hope and anxiety and pleasure and
trouble and it changes every day
and my life is sorter like a Kaleidt
scope with a now picture at every
turn and it i? turning all ‘he time,
but still there is an average of good
and an average of bad and we mud
take it altogether just as it comes for
it is the common lot David says
that a man is born to trouble as tin
sparks fly upward and David saw
a heap of it and a heap of was David’s
fault, but I donl think that we are
born to so much trouble. There is
more good in this life than had if a
man wi 1 behave himself and he can
behave’f he will try aud I dmiL think
that original sin wPl keep him in the
low grounds unless he wants to stay
there. Folks are like cattle and cats
and dogs. Some ot ’em are good
gentle an d kind and some aro not
but the majority of mankind had
rather do good than bad. 1m willing
to trust my raco for kindness and
protection and sympathy when I am
in trouble, that is except some.
There are some few I wouldeu t
trust for nothing for they belong to
the devil and I reckon cant help it
Close observers I think there is
a good streak in every man and I
know some who have managed to
hide it for 39 years and they are bids
ing it yet. I reckon we will hear of
it on their tombstones.
Ive been reading the life of Alck
-Stephens, ngood book and it has pro¬
voked the foregoing refl -ctionv. There
is a comfort in it, for it proves tba'
a great mans life is pretty much like
a oommou man’s life. You have got
to£«t down to the heart of a man and
his daily hopes and fears and trouble
to know what he is, and B>sw.Il
never phatograplied old Samuel .Johns
ston has photographed better than
Dick Johuston has photographed
Mr. S epbens. His inner life nev> r
before and after all it wns just an
average lite. Ho wasent a iamily
man ot his own but bis aff-clio s
hung around his kindred all the san e
as if they had been his children, Hi?
statesmanship aud his big speeches
and his political fusses with IPs ad
ersariest made him promi lent and
attracted attention, but that was the
smallest part ot his life—sorter like
Ohristnas and the 4th of July when
compared with the flight of time.
His speeches show his mind, Lut
letters to Linton and Colonel John¬
ston show his heart, hisemotious lire
longing tor homo aud love and friend
ship. He was a tired man, all his
.eventful life, tired of company and
struggles and contention. He
loved his kiudred. and especially
Litton with a love that strengthened
him and kept l iin alive. He loved his
Labors and bis servants and his dog.
He hardly ever wrote a letter home
wit out some kind word for Rio
“1 love him because he loves me and
that is reason enough.” When he
heard that Rio bad r ad a fight wiih
Bill Alexander’s big dog and whip*
ped him, he says be almost wept with
joy. He writes lovingly about 1 is
longs for a stroll iii the grove or the
orchard or the potatoe patch. He
wants to caress old Robin Snort and
give him some oats and load him to
the branch to drink. He is in love
with everything at home md says
“My dog Rio is almost blind and
now my greatest pleasure is to lead
him about and talk to him.” What
tt wounderful love he would have had
for wile and children. But then they
would have robbed him ot his thoughts
and his books and the country would
have hot know him as a statesman or
a philosopher.
This is a woundertul book of Mr.
Johnston’s aud will make any man
Better and mure charitable and loving
who read it. We arc all very much
alike, that is iu our home life w hich
is the biggest part of life and most
.concerns-Quc happiness. Mr. Stephe. is
had a- -borrowed -horse to ruti away
with him once and lie lost his mn ! >r<l
la an 1 ihen his hat and ’o'ted his
bones through his skin in two or
three p’act-s. Ilia school master was
Jq him on(;e and lie defied
hilM aK( i they made friends. Judge
Cone eut him all to pieces with a
knife but he wouldent take back
what fie said. He educated 52 \onng
men at college. He was always giving
away money He threw away twenty
five thousand dollars on the Atlanta
Sun under the vain idea that he
could run a newspaper when he was
no n ore fit for it than Marcel'us
Thornton. He gathered and wasted.
He made mistakes just like other pen
p'e and I take great comfort in hav¬
ing discovered tha' in some things
he was just as big a fool is I am.
There is ap >wor of consolation in
finding out that gicat men haveid
‘‘ha': sense in the world They
S.r Hac Newton cut a hole
ifl , M lmUoin ot his door for the cat
lo go in and when lie tat had kit
ero he t ut a sue 1 er le le for t 1 e kits
Lens just as though they couldent go
ih.ough the big one. I like that.
I never heaid Mr. Stephens make
but one speteh it* the court house
and that was in a minder case and
the prisoner wa< ited to give bond
and keep out of jail until the trial 1 1
the next term, anti Mr. Stephens was
against him and he fait!, ‘'May it
please your honor I shall take no
pleasure in his iuenre ration, hut sir
I trust your honor will make t :e bond
large enough and s rung ennuih to
hold him and keep him.” Then In*
elevated his voice and stretched forth
his long arm and as his bony fingers
trembled Le set earned: “May it
please ycur Iio. or do not let this man
escape, and he sung the last syllable
of the word so long and so loud v. e
almost see the prisoner flying
for bis life.
